Los v Angeles Finds New Trainer Cuts Costs

NEW TRAINER A SUCCESS—Hollywood High School students given
holt their behind-the-wheel training on this unique classroom device,
called the Aetna Drivotrainer, proved to be on a par with pupils
trained solely in real cars, according to report by Los Angeles City
School System.
LOS ANGELES—Successful use
of a revolutionary classroom train: r
that cuts the costs of teaching high
school students how to drive was
reported to the City Board of Edu
cation this week.
On a battery of scientific tests,
students trained with the new
device, called the Aetna Drivo
trainer, proved to be on a par
with those who took the conven
tional course in real cars.
Details of a research program
utilizing the Drivotrainer were pre
sented to board members in an 84-
page report by Superintendent of
Schools Claude L. Reeves.
The experiment was conducted
at Hollywood High School, with
a group of 120 students being
taught driving fundamentals on the
classroom machine and then com
pared with a similar group which
took the regular instructional pro
gram in standard automobiles.
.The experiment is part of a
nationwide research program spon
sored by the Aetna Casualty and
Surety Company, which developed
the device in an effort to meet the
needs of schools for an effective,
economical way of teaching youths
to drive. Other studies are still in
progress in the New York City
schools and at lowa State Teachers
College.
Introduced several years ago.
the Drivotrainer has attracted
nationwide interest among educa
tors as a possible answer to the
high cost of driver training. A
summary of the Ix>s Angeles report
is being sent to 5000 school admin
istrators to familiarize them with
results of the research study.
trine? th" Drivotrainer enables
up to 15 students to take hehind
the-wheel training at the same
time, compared to the one pupil a
teacher can instruz; in a real car.
it substantially reduces the h-'ffi
teaching costs that have retarded
the spread o' driver trainirg in
the nation’s schools.
With the D.ire.raiser .d "1 ’ly
wood High, on which 480 students
can be trained a year, per pupil
costs would be reduced 15 per cent,
but a larger unit designed to handle
900 would double the rate at which
costs could be cut, producing year
ly savings of nearly $12,000, the
report shows.
In submitting the report to the
Board of Education, Superin
tendent Reeves observed tnat in
addition to reducing costs the
Drivotrainer may help meet
teacher shortages, provide an added
safety measure for beginning
drivers, and be “most advanta
geous in standardizing teaching
procedures and course content.”
Two hundred forty students par
ticipated in the Los Angeles study,
which was directed by Cecil G.
Zaun, Los Angeles city schools
safety supervisor.
“Results indicate that practi
cally the same progress in driving
skill and knowledge will be experi
enced by a student trained by
either the experimental method,
using the Aetna Drivotrainer plus
three hours of on-the-road training,
or the California State prescribed
course,” the report states. Cali
fornia's standard course calls for
six hours on-the-road training.
On two of four tests used to
measure student performance at
the begirnir.g and end of the pro
gram, Drivotrainer students
showed significantly greater im
provement. On the other tests and
on a road exam given only at the
end of the course, there was no
significant difference in the two
groups.
Driver altitudes, recognized as
a major underlying cause of high
way accidents, is one of two areas
where Drivotrainer student? make
a better showing. “
As a result of the study, the
report states, “there is a greater
awareness of the infinite scope of
the contribution the Aetna Drivo
trainer may make to the field of
driv; r e ’.u :ion.”

In today’s “supermarket age” women shop less often and buy*more
on each trip. They like large, easy-to-handle carriers that hold a lot
and won't tip over. This new deluxe carrier, a free-wheeling, four wheel
cart, has a sturdy steel frame to take a lot of abuse. Its basket, designed
without waste space for maximum carrying capacity, is enclosed in
Wheeling expanded metal. What’s more, its open-meshed design per
mits full visibility for easy package identification. No wonder today’*
busy housewife shops less, giving ner more time for recreation.
