WATER SAFETY IS EVERYONE'S DUTY
WITH the coming of the summer season, thoughts turn
to the great outdoors. Weekenders begin their visits
to nearby lakes, ponds and stream to fish, swim and boat.
Unfortunately, danger lurks around
Pthe corner for a few of them regardless
of what safety measures they take. Acci
dents happen, whether or not they can be
avoided. However, a little caution nevr
hurt anyone and it has saved several
lives.
Drowning ranks second only to
traffic deaths as the major single
cause of accidental deaths in the na
tion. When a fisherman sets out on a
raiton lotcii junket he makes himself eligible for
Both. No one needs a lecture on the importance of
water safety. Yet, accidents inevitably happen despite
any precaution that might be taken. The important
thing to know is how to react in case you are involved
in an accident on water.
Dr. Fred R. Lanous, swimming coach at Georgia Tech
and an avid teacher of water safety, has developed a tech
nique for non-swimmers that keeps them afloat until
rescuers come. He calls his technique “Drownproofing”
and it consists of proper breathing as an aid in keeping
afloat.
Lanoue says this:
Nonswimmers should fill their lungs with air after
they are in the water following an accident and float
face down in the water. By using a downward thrust
of the arms, the victim can propel himself forward on
top of the water until his oxygen has given out. Then,
a downward thrust of the arms will lift the victim out
of the water far enough to inhale another passel of air.
After he has completed this cycle, the swimmer should
drop his head hack into the water and begin anew.
One of the No. 1 reasons for drowning is panic. When
a swimmer loses his faculties for even a moment, the
energy expelled during that period would ordinarily last
him for several minutes. A tired accident victim will have
great odds to overcome if he stays afloat until help comes.

Safety First Begins In Boats
Each boater or fisherman should be fully orientated on
proper handling of whatever craft he mans before taking
it onto the water.
He should familiarize himself with the load limit
and the location of life preservers. He should never
go out in a boat without enough preservers to pass out
to his passengers. He should never take his boat into
rough water, or even go onto the water if it is rough.
He should be sure that no one misbehaves while he is
in command of a boat and he should make sure his
passengers, if they’re fishermen, know how to cast
from a” craft before letting them fish.
Of course, these rules are basic. But the number of fish
ermen and boaters who violate them, even they know they
are wrong, probably the thing they don’t realize is that
every time they violate a water safety measure, they are
inviting danger. , ... ,
Water safety is everyone s duty, whether they are a
fisherman a boater, swimmer, picnicker or simply a recrea
tion-seeker It is up to I hem to practice water safety them
selves and make sure it is practiced by everyone in their
party They owe it to themselves, their family and rela
tives to learn to protect themselves in case of accident.
Probably hundreds of Georgians will be victims of
water accidents this summer. Some will be fatal others
only minor. But whatever the case, none can rest safely
until he is sure he knows lie can take care of himself in
case of accident
