CUTTING TIMBER
Timber resources in the United
States are one of our greatest
sources of natural wealth and land
owners should exercise more care
in contracting for the removal of
timber from their property.
In doing so, they will benefit far
more than if they allow indiscrimi
nate cutting, because a sapling can
multiply in value ten-fold in just a
few years.
Anyone who has traveled extens
ively abroad will have been im
pressed with the conservation prac
tices of such countries as Germany.
In Germany one can cut a tree but
he must plant two others each
time he cuts one. In this way more
trees are planted than are cut each
year and the resources of the coun
try are maintained.
In many sections of the United
States cutting has been carried out
with little regard for conservation
practices and the removal of timb
er far surpasses replanting. We
suggest, then, that property owners
give sincere thought to the econo
mics involved in the removal of
timber and require that timber-cut
ting on their property be carried
out on a selective and discriminat
ing basis, saving small trees as a
source of income in the years
ahead and cutting only those trees
which are of appropriate size.
