MOTHER'S DAY MEMENTO
Sunday, May 12, will mark the forty-third national observance
of Mother’s Day. It’s a time to remember and a time to record.
Highlights from a day such as this make memorable picture
records. A good gift thought might well be a camera for Mother's
own use. After all, picture-taking opportunities begin at home
with the little everyday events so important to any family snap
shot story. -

ANOTHER NEW CAR
In addition to the imminent introduction of
the Ford Motor Company’s new automobile, the
Edsel, it is now revealed that anew low-priced
car will be introduced in this country by the
Studebaker-Packard Corporation before fall.
The car, which will be offered in the Stube
baker line, will sell for less than $2,000 and will
be available in two and four-door sedans, and a
station wagon model.
It is said that the new cars will be economical
and that they will achieve 25 to SO miles on a
gallon of gasoline with their six-cylinder en
gines. •
It is being speculated that the car will be the
result of the combined efforts of the Studebaker
-Packard Corporation and Daimler-Benz A. G.,
of West Gei'many. The German corporation and
Curtis-Wright, an American corporation, have
played a role in the effort to rejuvenate the
Studebaker-Packard Corporation and keep it
in contention as an automobile producers.
Thus the American motoring public is due to
see at least two new cars this year, and possibly
four. The Edsel is expected to be priced close to
the three popular low-priced cars on the Ameri
can scene, and compete with both the Ford
Motor Company’s Fords and Mercurys.
THE TORNADO
Recent tornadoes in Texas and Georgia have
focused attention on this type of storm, about
which compartively little is known even today.
One of the fienerally-agreed upon conditions
which usually exists before a tornado is an in
version. This places a layer of heavier air above
a layer of light air, temporarily, and the heavier
air eventually breaks through to the surface of
the earth.
This condition often occurs along an occluded
front, and when it does-most often in the spring
and early summer - tornado conditions are like
ly. Unlike hurricanes, tornadoes do not live long
The vmay travel a few miles or as many as sev
eral hundred miles, but they usually bounce
over the earth and hit relatively few places
along their course. They range in width from
several hundred yards to two or three miles. The
speed of wind inside them is estimated to exceed
150 miles an hour.
Only in Russia and in the middle and western
sections of the United States are tornadoes, as
we know them, frequent occurrence. Most of
Europe, and other parts of the world, are spar
ed this particular type of storm.
