State 4-H Soil,
Poultry Champs
Top state honors were won by
two teen-agers for outstanding
records in 4-H Club project work.
They will be among Georgia dele
gates to attend the* annual 4-H
' Club CJongross in Chicago during
i the week of December 1-5.
Putting all of his eggs in one
basket was a winning factor for
Jack Barker, 18, of Ware County,
who is state champion in the na
tional 4-H Poultry program. A
trip to Club Congress is his re
ward. provided by the Sears Roe
buck Foundation.
A club member for eight years.
Jack worked with his father and
brother to raise 54,200 broilers.
He made his first brooder from a
washtub. Then his father built a
poultry house and installed
brooder equipment.
Jack grew 12,000 birds a year
and was able to help his sister
through college, buy a tractor,
a freezer and a TV set.

He was president and junior
leader of his club, made over 150
exhibits and demonstrations, and
gave over GO 4-H talks.
Understanding and coopera
tion in a farm program of 4-H
Soil and Water conservation
brought distinction to James
Bomar, 17, of Fulton county, who
won the 1957 state award.
James and his brother under
took the rehabilitating of a 316-
acre farm. The soil conservation
technician prepared a land inven
tory and capability map. and the
boys followed it carefully. They
planted 11.000 pine trees to stop
soil erosion and 10 acres of
Ktidzu to fill gullies.
James was twice president of
his local club and of the county
council. He is a junior leader and
district officer. He entered Geor
gia Tech last June. His trip is
provided by the Firestone Tire &
Rtibher Cos.
Both these 4-H programs are
directed by the Cooperative Ex
tension Service.
Eisenhower urges wider exchange
programs.
