A compliment remains the best way in insur

Argumentative souls, short of facts, are very
argumentative.
Most of the over-active civic workers know

Your best friend is the one who will tell you

Here are the answers to some
important questions concerning the
storage of shelled corn. This infor
! mation has been furnished me by
I Paul Crawford, agricultural engi-
J neer, Agricultural Extension Ser-
vice, University of Georgia. For
more information please contact
my office.
Q What moisture content must
shelled corn have to be stored safe
ly? A Shelled corn should have a
moisture content of about 12 per
cent or less before storing. Mach
ine harvested shelled corn some
times has a moisture content of
near 25 percent, as it comes from
the field.
Q —Can the corn be dried in
storage? A -Yes, Corn can be dried
to a safe moisture content using
either heated or unheated air.
Use of unheated air is generally
satisfactory, but is very slow as
compared to use of heated air.
Heated air drys rapidly. It is nec
essarily more expensive because of
fuel and equipment costs. However,
it is usually more practical where
large amounts of grain are to be
dried.
Q - Can my present bin be con
verted to a dryer? A—Genuerally,
yes. The sides of the building must
be air-tight and a perforated floor
must be installed in the bin. There
are continuous type dryers in which
corn may be dried before it is
placed in the bin. These dryers are
usually more expensive and are
suitable for large quantities of
corn.
Q —How deep can I dry shelled
corn in a bin? A About 8 feet is
considered the maximum depth for
economical drying. Depths above 8
feet require larger and more ex
pensive fans and motors.
Q —How long does it take to dry
a bin of shelled corn with unheated
air? A —No specific answer can be
given, but tests have shown it
>taWes from 8 to 16 days to dry
corn from 25 percent moisture
down to safe storage. The length
of time is dependent on the weath
er tot a large extent.
Q —How long does it take to dry
a bin of shelled corn with heated
air? A—Again, there is no specific
answer, but usually the moisture
may be reduced from 22t0 122 per
cent in from 20 to 30 hours, de
pending on the temperature and
rate of air flow. This is based on
an air flow rate of scfm per bush-
el.
Q If heated air is used, how
high can the temperature be with
out damaging the grain? A—Maxi
mum ttemperature of the drying
air should be as follows: (1) corn
to be used as seed —110 degrees F.:
(2) corn for wet milling 130 de
grees F.; and (3) corn for ground
feed—l6o degrees F.
Q —After the corn is dry and
put in storage, can it beforgotten?
A —No. Moisture buildups occur
due to temperature changes during
the storage period. Spoilage can be
1 prevented by installing perforated
1 pipes or ducts in the bins and by
using a small fan, drawing cool
air through the grain to equalize
the temperature, and prevent mois
ture from being deposited in the
upper levels, or by running the
dryer fan, if it is still connected
to the bin.
Next week, I will continue this
column on grain storage with some
questions and answers about grain
storage buildings.
