NOTES AND COMMENTS
Sucked Bait: Something for nothing.
Just because a man has an axe to grind he
doesn’t become a woodsman.
Charity is a great virtue but it is seldom seen
in economic activities.
It is funny thing but people who have work
to do wdl very often stop to play.
The worst kind of fog to endure is to en
counter a talkative brother in a mental fog.
Some business men fail to exhibit patriotism
until they see a chance for fifty percent.
You can never tell when a little careful driv
ing will save your life on the highways.
APPRECIATE SUCCESSFUL MEN
The people who live in Cumming should not
have to be taught the valuable lesson of co
operation. It plays a vital part in the successful
growth of any city, although, under present
economic organization, its power is not as plain
as in the older days when every citizen turned
out to put his shoulder to some public enterprise.
One of the most valuable assets that a town
can have is successful men with years of ex
perience. Get that, and remember it. It is high
time that the worth of successful business men
Ik; appreciated. From them, if anywhere, will
come the impulses that lead CUMMING to big
ger and better achievements.
LONGER DAYS
You may not notice it but the days are al
ready getting longer -and will continue to do
so until late June, when the Summer Solstice
will end the process.
The shortest day of the year fell just before
Christmas, December 21st, and since that time,
by a few minutes each day, the days have been
stretchinig. Yet the coldest period of winter
lies ahead - unless abnormal winter weather
is in store.
If you wonder why January and February
are colder than December, customarily, even
though there is more sunlight, as the sun moves
northward, the reason is that the earth has lost
more of its stored heat from summer by the
time the first two months of the year roll around
In December, and especially in November,
when the days and sun’s heating are short,
much of the summer heat is still retained by
the earth but by January and February, more
of it has been lost. Thus, we still have the tough
est part of the winter ahead -and winter will
not end until the vernal equinox March 21st,
which is the first day of Spring. But, always
remember, no one knows what Mother Nature,
or the weather will do. Spring might arrive in
February, or in May. We must wait and see.

Many a life of the party is a washout at home
Despite public alarm over sex crimes there
seems to be no let-up in offenses of this type.
Some men think their families owe them a

ffffffffffffffffffff
Crisp fall weather spells out
door fun for me —and for about
twenty-five million other sports
men who love roaming woods
and fields with hunting bows or
guns. Fall weather spells family
picnics, too. So, let’s get out and
enjoy it.
If you think outdoor cooking
is for experts or that it needs
lots of pots and pans and stuff
let’s see how easy it really
can be! Our menu could be steak
or lamb or pork chops, or chick
en broilers, or fish. For vege
tables, let’s have buttered onions
baked in foil, or butternut squash
flavored with bacon and onion.
Let’s have baked potatoes with
the top skin quartered and
puffed open, adding a square of
butter, a dash of salt, and per
haps a big spoonful of cottage
cheese. Let’s have a selection of
those delicious modern instant
beverages —and an easy and
unusual dessert made right on
the spot!
The only cooking pot we’ll
r eed is something to boil water
in. Our small open fire is con
verted to a stove by a wire grid
(such a; from an old refrigera
tor) and a double layer of metal
foil. Paper plates and cups
save washing. All else we need |
is eating tools and a heal ty ap
petite.
Wash medium sized potatoes
and wrap individually in foil.
Slice onions in half, put them
together again with a pat of
butter and seasoning in between,
and wrap them in foil. Slice
squash lengthwise, and put onion
slices and a strip of bacon be
tween. Foil wrap these, too.
Get the fire going early so you
have a small but hot bed of glov
ing coals. The fire is in a U
shnoed border of rocks, with the
grid placed on top. An hour be
fore dinner, put the vegetables
in the ashes neur the hot coals,
turning them occasionally. If
you’ve forgotten tongs, cut aid
bond a finger-sized green branch,
as shown. Chicken broilers

For hamburgs, bacon and eggs,
hot dogs, pancakes or fish,
spread doubled foil over the grid
and fry them on this. Why
bother with a skillet?
While waiting for dinner, let’s
enjoy a selection of the easiest
and most delicious hot drinks a
sportsman ever tasted. Good
cooks provide a choice —and
the choice is a wide one. Why
waste time and bother with cof
fee grounds when “Nescafe”
Instant Coffee is so much easier?
I vote for “Nescafe” because it
is 100% pure coffee, with only
the grounds removed. All you
do is add very hot water to a
spoonful in a cup. I like to rec
ommend “Everßeady” Cocoa
because this is the only kind I
know of which has sugar and
whole milk already in it. Just
add very hot water to two or
three spoonsful. “Everßeady”
Cocoa is a growingly popular
sportsman’s drink, and has been
the favorite of explorers and
athletes for years because it is
delicious, invigorating,
packed with energy.
To complete the instant drink
lineup, we have “Nestea” (In
stant Tea) and “Nestie’s” chick
en or beef bouillons. The bouil
lons now come in handy, instant
ly blending granulated form.
Thus, only one pot of very hot
water gives everyone a choice of
at least five instant drinks. As an
i added idea, why not carry a
1 Thermos vacuum bottle of very
hot water in your car plus
these famous Nestle's instant
beverages —and stop when
you’re tir'-d for a “beverage
break’’ along the way!

Vs hat’s for dessert? Here’s a
good one. Just mix equal parts
of “Nestie’s Everßeady” Cocoa
and sweet condensed milk.
Spread over toast or bre?d and
heat until it bubbles.
