May Trace Minerals Be Overdone?
At times tile question i
raised whether it is advisable
tn allow free neeesß to trace
mineral salt, where the live
stock ration* are balanced with
commercial supplements that
are already supplied with trace
minerals. Is it possible that the
cows or pigs or other farm
animals in such cases get too

Furthermore, if there is any
question concerning the ade
quate supply of these trace
minerals you should he sure to
feed trace mineral salt to avoid
the possible trace mineral de
ficiency diseases.
Farm animals have demon
strated a tolerance for trace
minerals greatly in excess of
the levels that have been found
preventive or curative for de
ficiency diseases, (lever. Rupel
and Hart of the Wisconsin Ex
periment Station found that
from .'l to 5 milligrams of cobalt

were better off with fi to 8 times
the curative level than they
were when fed rations deficient
in cobalt.
Another case is that of zinc.
From 50 to 100 parts zinc in
a million parts of feed protect
pigs against the skin disease of
parakeratosis. Hut a research
worker at Wisconsin found that
pigs tolerated more than fiOO
parts zinc per million parts of
teed 4
Still another evidence of
livestock’s trace mineral toler
ance is that of iodine fed in
excess of the normal amount
of 0.007 per cent in tin* stand
ard iodized salt. During the
thirties there was promoted a
so-called super-iodized salt
having 0 times ns much iodine
ns the standard variety. So far
as the* writer knows, there were
no unfavorable reports.
This is not a defense of the
attitude that if a little is good,
n lot is better. A lot in some
cases may be had. However,
what evidence there is in the
experience of researchers work
in/: with the common trace
minerals demonstrates that
what may be a double close, or
even more, has easily been tol
erated by farm animals.
Trace mineral salt is always
good insurance against these
particular mineral deficiency
losses.

in steer: Too much, of course,
is too much. Hut there is no
experimental evidence that
corn when properly used causes
garget or mastitis in cows.
