The owner chose asphalt
shh.gles because of the reliable
service they had given on the
roof of the original house, and
because he liked the silvery gray
color used on the old roof.
Before the interior was parti
tioned otr and finished with gyp
sum board, the owner installed
mineral wool four inches thick
in the ceiling and three inches
thick in the walls to insure sum
mer comfort and economical
winter heating.
Another savings was in the use
of double-hung window units of
ponderosa pine. These helped
reduce labor costs, since they are
assembled at the factory and
need only' be nailed into the w in
dow opening when they arrive at
the building site.
Total cost of the expansion,
i including roughed-in plumbing
for the second-floor bathroom,
j was $2,700.

q—What’s the best way to re
move paint from a ceiling? I’ve
tried paint remover, but it drips.
A—A commercial paint re
mover is available especially for
ceilings. It is paste-like, and will
not drip when properly applied.
q—We’d like to insulate our
old house, but a neighbor said
we’d have to open up the walls
and ceilings inside to install it.
Isn’t there an easier wav?
A—Your neighbor is behind
the times. Modern _ techniques
have been developed by insula
tion engineers to permit mineral
wool to be forced into walls and
other inaccessible areas under
air pressure. The pressure packs
the mineral wool tightly into
every corner and crevice, form
ing a thick blanket of protec
tion all around the house. To do
the job, workmen remove small
pieces of siding and drill holes
in the sheathing. The end of a
flexible rubber hose goes into
the hole, and insulation is
pumped through the hose. When
the space is filled, the siding is
carefully replaced.
Q—l’d like to try the new
weed killer that changes chemi
cally to fertilizer two or three
weeks after it’s applied. What
do I ask for?
A—There are several brands,
but your garden supply dealer
will know what you want if you
ask for garden cyanimide.
Q —l want to paint the con
crete floor of our basement, but
my wife refuses to let me bring
muriatic acid into the house for
pre-etching the concrete. Any
suggestions?
A—Today you can buy a num
ber of paints for concrete that
do not require the use of acid.
Q—How often should an oil
burning furnace be cleaned and
inspected?
A—Twice a year. A good rule
is once in the Fall before the
heating season, and again in
Spring after the season is over.
Photos Help
Choose Color
For Painting
Don't guess and gamble when
you repaint, reroof, or redeco
rate the exterior of your home
in other ways, says Margaret
Hargreaves, a leading California
home color stylist.
If you can't afford the services
of a’ professional color stylist,
says Miss Hargreaves, try a
number of color combinations
on enlarged photographs of your
house. Here are steps to follow
for an exterior color scheme
everyone \ 1 like:
1. Take—have taxen—a
good photo of the house, and
order at least a dozen 8 by 10-
inch enlargements made on
matt-surfaced paper.
2. Sit down under a good light
with the photographs and a box
of quality water colors and
start thinking of colors you hon
estly like. Color one photo at
a time.
3. Miss Hargrea V’ti o guc/vl
color stylists always start with
the roof because this is a large,
important color area, and pro
vides a color “key” for the oth
er components of the house.
Since asphalt shingles are avail
able in almost every color imag
inable. you can "let yourself
go.” Keep in mind, however,
that if your house is tall and
boxy it will look better with a
dark roof color. If it’s small and
low, a light color will make it
seem bigger.
4. Choose any SiUC w ail color
that appeals to you. as long as
it doesn’t clash with the roof
color. A good idea is to start
on the first photo with a sharp
color, and work toward softer
shades as you go along. This
will give you a range of con
trasts.
5. Trim, .nuuc..,
flower boxes, and doors are im
portant color areas. Color styl
ists have found that trim and
windows painted the same color
s the roof can give unity to
the color scheme. Doors, shut
ters and flower boxes are good
spots to use sharp accent colors.

Attic Ideal for Equipment
Pitched Roof Simplifies Air Condition!
A flit roof is a distinct dis- 1
„iv, ntage to a house when its
"■v/ners decide they want to in- i
VU "entral air conditioning.
So says the Westinghouse
B ectric Corp. in anew booklet
c.i residential air conditioning.
Flat roofs with no attics,
Westinghouse engineers point
cut, offer no space for equip
ment, and make it extremely
difficult to install the extra insu
lation needed for air condition
ing.
“Ventilation is difficult and
less effective than with attics.
Roof designs of this type make
installation of duct work very
difficult.”
Steeply pitched roofs, t.ie re
searchers add, make installation
of equipment and ducts rela
tively easy, and provide ade
quate ventilation. A further ad
vantage, they point out, is that
the thick insulation required
for efficient, economical cooling
is easier to install, and cooling
equipment can be smaller and
less costly.
A number of studies have
shown that when a 6-inch thick
ness of mineral wool is installed
in ceilings, a minimum of 3
inches in walls, and at least 2
inches in floors over uncooled
