HEART DISEASE A KILLER
Heart disease is rapidly becoming the chief
cause of death in the Lnited States, being far
ahead of cancer, the second on the list of dis
eases which kill the greatest number of people
in Uie United States every year.
Concerning heart disease, a recognized au
thority reports that coronary sclerosis is some
time called the “disease of the intelligentsia’’
because of the susceptibility of physicians, bnak
crs, lawyers and clergymen. The characteristics
of the disease, including the hardening of the
nerves, ligaments and blood vessels around the
heart, and its incidence, is highest among those
who do mental work and lowest among those
who do manual labor.
The NEWS naturally hesitates to attempt any
conclusion from these observations, but, appar
ently, the disease attacks individuals who are
prone to forget the importance of physical ex
ercise while consuming their energies in the
anxiety of mental worries. It would therefore
appear that, somewhere along the line of popu
lar education in this country, the physical na
ture of man has been neglected.
If this is true, and we believe it is, we might
save the lives of future professional men in this
community by stressing athletic interests during
childhood, with the hope that, when these indi
viduals reach maturity, they will have sense
enough to continue what has been wisely begun.
HOW TO INFLUENCE CHILDREN
Mothers and fathers of GUMMING often
wonder whether certain activity of their young
sons and daughters is exactly the wise thmg
for young people.
The anxiety of parents about the conduct of
their children is understandable. Naturally, they
are sincerely concerned. They want their boys
and girls to grow into fine men and women.
There is a way in which parents can infuence
the conduct of their children. It is not by de
nouncing their customs or punishing the young
people. After all, growing boys and girls re
quire some form of amusement and social life,
it is natural for them to congregate together.
If parents dislike current activities it might be
a good idea for parents to provide other activity.
Before older people complain of what young
er people are doing, it behooves them to bestir
themselves and see what they are doing for
the boys and the girls.
MAKING LIFE A SUCCESS
Practically every person in FORSYTH
COUNTY, whether man or woman, boy or girl,
regardless of age and circumstances, hopes and
intends to make life a success.
Stated in general terms, this ambition is
common to all of us. It is only when we attempt
to define the meaning of “success” that differ
ences of opinion develop. Consequently, it might
be a good idea for the individual to stop long
enough to ponder the question and answer it.

The For*vth Countv Newt
The individual, in his or her zeal to be suc
cessful, often accepts a popular definition of
the term, and thereby loses sight of the real
goal. One’s success is not to be measured by the
wealth accumulated, the worldly honors receiv
ed, or the fickle acclamation of so-called pub
lic opinion.
So, today, when there are so many ideas
about success, we suggest that the individual
reader analyze his or her conception. It should
be obvious, we think, that one can be successful
only when life is in harmony witth our inner
convictions. Yet, if our principles be wrong, life
must be imperfect.
To tthose who read this article, and, parti
cularly to the young people, we suggest the ef
fort to outline definite principles which are con
sidered acceptable guides. Asa start, one might
try to discover a definite principle upon which
which one can base daily activity and to which
one is willing to be loyal under all circumstances
This might sound easy, but test it for yourself.
LEARN THE ART OF LIVING
The people of FORSYTH COUNTY usually
can be counted upon to give generous financial
support to their school system and the cause
of education in general.
For many years they have been convinced of
the economic value of education. While there
was a time, during the depression years, when
education failed to insure profitable employ
ment, there is general recognition of the fact
that education improves an individual and
makes a more efficient human being.
There has been, perhaps, a failure to under
stand clearly that education is not an end in
itself, but a means to more compplete living
for the individual. Some teachers, in fact, have
become so enthused over methods anad im
provements in the educational system that they
have lost sight of the fundamental purpose of
education itself.
Teaching technique has been perfected to a
considerable degree, the distribution of intelli
gence has been increased, and the knowledge
of human beings greatly advanced through the
ages. Nevertheless, there sometimes seems to
be something of a failure to develop the wis
dom necessary to make intelligent individuals
or to apply knowledge intelligently to the prob
lems of living itself.
Some modern psychiatrists attribute many
of the mental ills of the present day to the dis
parity between abstract knowledge acquired
and education as to how to use it in the art of
living. Because, with all our intelligence, few
of us know how to live, and, therefore, many
suffer physical breakdowns.
Nevre bother about trying to appear smart;
put your energy into being smart.
Every now and then we hear a businessman
complaining, but he never mentions that he is
making more money than he ever made in his
life.

This is a good time for all automobile drivers
of Cumming to resolve to drive slowly on out

Most of the problems of the nation would be
