Helping crip pled children is one of the more rewarding things we can do in our efforts to help our felow-man. In most states a volunteer organization en thusiastically conducts the Easter Seal sale each year. Letters are sent out to citizens in all areas, seeking the financial support of citizens for this independent, voluntary organization. A number of children walk today because of the existence of this organization and its work in past years. We solicit the attention of our readers to the present Easter Seal drive and recommend that they support the effort m behalf of crippled children if they are fin ancially able to do so. WATCH YOURSELF PHYSICALLY About the only time that the average citizen of Forsyth County pays any attention his, oi lier, physical well-being is when illness or ac cident puts them in bed. This is, unfortunately, the truth in regard to most persons. It is a reflection upon the the intelligence that men and women are supposed to have. The neglect of the body is only comparable to our negligence in regard to mental powers. Every individual has abundant opportunity to improve intellectually, but few of us bother ourselves to do so. When it comes to the realm of spiritual im provement, the average individual goes into com plete eclipse, except in extrmely rare and try- 30% Every Article in Our Store oSS oK ... ON SALE ... Those of us who believe in the possession of a soul know full well that our spiritual growth is possible and most of us be lieve that it is the great function of human existence. In spite of this belief and the faith that moves us along life’s highway, we carelessly drift along without bothering very much about prin ciples or the lack of them. Few of us attempt to guide our daily lives by the eternal verities that we profess to accept. This is a little bit foolish, when one begins to reflect upon it. The encouraging thing about individual growth is that it requires no committee meet ings, no mass purpose, and no assistance from other people. It is one job that the individual can plan and complete upon personal initiative. The only question is, “When will be begin?’ SYMINGTON AND DULLES Senator Stuart Symington, Missouri Demo crat, has suggested that President Eisenhower name anew Secretary of State. Symington, while not criticizing anything Dulles has done, contends that the United States needs a healthy and active Secretary of State at this time as never before. Symington’s suggestion was certain to stir up controversy, and has. Other Senators on C apitol Hill, and friends of the Secretary, have rallied to his defensive and there is little reason to be lieve that President Eisenhower will follow Symington’s advice. us On the contrary, President Eisenhower is usually quite reluctant to make decisions of this kind, and he has gone on record, on more than one occasion, as being willing to wait until Secretary Dulles decides, himself, to resume his leadership or step down. On one score, however, Senator Symington is correct. The United States does need an active Secretary of State at this time. Whether he can do anything about it or not, or whether the President should, is another question. JUST OFF PRESS “Modified Simple Rudiments of Music” edited by HERMAN H. NEPOTISM IN WASHINGTON The decision of an lowa Congressman tto re (luce his son's pay - the son working in the Congressman’s office - is interesting. The sub ject of nepotism in Washington has alway been an intriguing and controversial one. What most people do not realize is that the House payrool is an open book, and reporters may examine it and see who is being paid what at any time. On the other hand, the Senate maintains a secrecy which is not m the bes in terests of the Senate, the budget, or the country as whole. It is impossible tto find out who each Senator has on his payroll and what he is paying lm. In some cases, this information may be obtain able by right, as it is in the House. What is now needed is a bill requiring that the Senate payroll be made public. Alter all, it is the tax-payer’s money and therefore public moneyy, and the press, and the average citizen, have a right to know what the Senate is doing with government money, as far as its payio is concerned.
