In these days of high production
costs one important way to save
is to check farming operations
carefully for waste motion or cteps
that can be eliminated. Often as
not a careful check will reveal
many small unnecessary expenses
which, when eliminated, can result
in quite a saving over a crop yare.
For example, here are six ways
you may save fuel in field oper
ations of farm machinery.
1. Practice contour cropping on
slopin land it reduces fuel needs
copnpared to up and down hill
operations.
2. Maintain best adjustment of
tractor carburetor and thermostat
for too fuel efficiency.
3. Plow no deener than necessary
to make a suitable seedbed.
4. Eliminate unnecessary opera
tions stalk cutter is generally
unnecessary in seedbed prepara
tion for oats.
5. Combine implements and op
erations where possible.
6. Use round and round and
long row pal terns to reduce and
travel.
Here are three ways to give bet
ter protection to fuels stored on
the farm.
1. Use lock to prevent theft.
2. Locate tank in shade and use
a special pressure cap to reduce
loss by evaporation.
3. Store fuels away from build-
I ings to minimize possible losses
' from fires.
Better repair of machinery and
equipment may save labor and ex
penses may times during a year.
Here are four ways to cut such
costs.
1. Repair and maintain machin
ery and equipment to extend useful
ness and to prevent breakdowns.
2. Do as much of your own re
pair and maintenance work as your
labor and ability permit.
3. Get major jobs, such as a
tractor overhaul, done during ser
vice man’s off-season. This may
give you a good break on the cost
charged for such work.
4. Use reasonable rates of field
travel. This will reduce breakdowns
by machinery as well as safeguard
the operator.

BACK iO WORK! Every year in tne C -ally a
million telephone spring cords lose their stretch after heavy
use. But we don’t hrow them away. We send most of
them to a Western Electric center, where they go through
washing, rewinding, and heat treatments. They come back
to us good as new—ready to return to service. We figure
it’s good sense—and sound economy—to make equipment
work as hard as possible for you!

IT OFTEN COSTS LESS THAN A LETTER to make a
long distance call. Seems incredible, yet this was actually
proved in a study made by American Business Magazine.
The study showed that, by the time you figure steno
graphic costs, mailing, filing and materials, the average
business letter costs $1.70. If you’ll check our Long Dis
tance rates, you’ll see how many distant places you can
call for even less than that. What’s more—a Long Dis
tance call is usually better than a letter, because it’s faster,
more personal and gets quicker action.

I’m the type that goes for solid comfort! Pipe and slippers
... newspaper ... phone right at my elbow. That’s what
I call real living! Happily, most anyone can enjoy those
little comforts, because extension phones cost only a few
cents a day. And, man, they’re worth it! No mad dashes
through the house ... no disappointment of getting there
seconds too late. Why not treat yourself to extension
phones w'here you need them. The cost is small. Just give
us a ring, and we’ll put ’em in!
