Friends of Mr. Howard Hughes
of Gainesville will be interested to
know he is much improved. How
ever, he is still in Hall County
Hospital. Mrs. Hughes will be
remembered as Betty Bannister

Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Thomas spent
last week in Alabama, Tennessee,
Kentucky and North Carolina meet
ing old friends and making new
ones that will attend the Reunion
of Old Steam Machinery from Ohio
across states to California and
Canada.
NEW DIRECTOR OF NURSES
Mrs. Elizabeth Seagraves of Hall
County is now the new' director of
Nurses for the Forsyth County
Hospital, as announced by Mr.
Bruce oßggan, Superintendent.
Mrs. Seagraves was formerly
employed at the Hall County Hos
pital in Gainesville, and received
her nursing degree from the Craw
ford Long School of Nursing in
Miss Barbare Forrest of North
Georgia College spent the weekend
with her parents Mr. and Mrs.
Paul Forrest
Mr. Leßoy Biker, President of
the National Thresher Association
and wife Blaker, Secretary from
Alvarston, Ohio visited A. G. Thom
as collection of Old Steam Engines
recently.
MISS DOROTHY BUICE
HONORED AT SHOWER
On Wednesday evening, March
4th, Mesdames Betty Hughes and
Sarah Garrett entertained Miss
Dorothy Buice, bride-elect at a
miscellaneous shower at the Silver
City Club House.
There were about 40 guests pres
ent.
A color scheme of green and
yellow was carried out. The table
was overlaid with a yellow linen
cloth centered with spring flowers.
After the bride-elect opened her
many lovely gifts, refreshments of
delicious punch, green and yellow
cup cakes, sandwiches, nuts and
mints were served.
BROWNIE SCOUT REPORT
Troop No. 2 of Brownie Scouts
met at the home of Mrs. George
Bagiev. Susan Bagley acted as
hostess. We discussed the ten laws
of Girl Scouting.
Those present were: Susan Grav
itt, Susan Bagley, Judy Smith, Gail
Bramblett, Peggy Suddert’n, Linda
Valentine, Joan McCarty, Elaine
Coots, and Nancy Boggan.
We had one visitor, Pat Bagley
and everyone enjoyed having her
with us.
Refreshments of cake and punch,
served by Susan Bagley were en
joyed by all. We helped Susan
celebrate her Ninth birthday.

CAROLYN PULLIAM ELECTED
STATE BETA CLUB OFFICER
Miss Carolyn Pulliam, was elect
ed Vice-president of the Georgia
Beta Club at the Annual Beta
Club Convention, held in Atlanta
last week. The sixteen year-old
Forsyth County High School junior
won out over three other candi
dates from various sections of the
State.
Miss Pulliam is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. D. F. Pulliam of
Cumming.
RANGE ROUNTREE
STAR STUDENT
Ranee Rountree has been named
the 1959 STAR student for the
Forsyth school system, the Cum
ming Chamber of Commerce an
nounced this w'eek. The STAR
student is enrolled at Forsyth
County High School.
The newly named student serves
both as Star student for Forsyth
County High School and for the
Forsyth County school system.
The announcements were made
as a part of the Student Teacher
Achievement Recognition ISTARI
p-ogram, sponsored state-wide bv
the Georgia State Chamber of
Commerce, and in the Forsyth
County school svstem by superin
tendent Almon Hill. The program
is designed to encourage and to
honor scholastic achievement thru
out Georgia. Designation of STAR
students was determined by top
ranking scores they made in the
recent annual College Board Schol
astic Aptitude test.
School System and district Star
students are selected from those
who scored highest at the indivi
dual high school level. A Georgia
STAR student and STAR teacher
are selected at the State level.
Shortly after the announcement
was made, the student named Mrs.
Wilsm Chaffin, teacher at Morgan
County High School as STAR
teacher, the teacher who. in the
student's opinion made the great
est contribution to the student’s
! scholastic achievement.
Winners at the school system
level and their STAR teachers will
be honored at a special State
Chamber of Commerce luncheon in
Atlanta on April 24 and given a
| tour of the city.
District STAR students and
| STAR teacher will be given a
free, week-long educational tour
of the State.
The Star student for Forsyth
County school system is the son of
Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Rountree
and resides in Cumming, Georgia.

CLUB MEETS
The Junior Garden Club recently
organized and sponsored by the
Sawr.es Garden C'ub, under the
leadership of Mrs. Jewell Bannister
held its regular meeting Wednes
day afternoon at 3 o’clock in Mrs.
Bannister class room.
Interesting films on birds, flow
ers and gardens were shown which
everyone enjoyed.

ments of cookies and cokes.

“Living With Diabetes”
A conference on the subject of
diabetes will be held at the Cum
nvng Methodist Church on Tues
day, March 24, 1959. This meeting
is sponsored hv the physicians of
Forsvth County and the Forsyth
County Denartment.
The dismission throughout the
meeting will he centered on “living
with diabetes”. Diet will be dis
missed bv trained nutritionists from
the State Health Department. One
of our local doctors will speak on
the “Problems of a Diabetic”. De
monstrations on Urine testing, In
sulin inflection and care of the
feet will be given. Vi his should be
a very interesting and informative
meeting. We hope that all diabetics,
relatives of diabetics, nurses and
anyone else who is interested in
diabetes will attend this conference.
GIRL SCOUT NEWS
The Girl Scouts of Cumming met
on March 16. in Mrs. James Ot
well’s room. We went in our Pa
trols and collected dues.
Refreshments were served by
Elaine Westh-ook. Audrey Fowler,
and Melba Hendrix.
Patrols 1 and 3 went on the
Civil Defense Bus to Mrs. Helen
Brice’s home to watch birds. M r s.
B-ice has a bird sanctuary. We
were also shown her collection of
chickens. She has over 300 in her
collection.
Wo wish to thank Mrs. Brice for
lifting us visit in her home. We
ntso wish to thank the Civil De
fense for the use of their bus.
Meanwhile Patrols 2 and 4 saw
some films on birds.
A ftp’wards we met at the school
building and were dismissed.

of the Uppper Chattahoochee Valley
Association attended a meeting at
the State Capitol Thursday in con
nection with the newly proposed
Two million dollar State Park, at
or near Holliday in Hall County
and near the Gwinnette County
line. This State Park will be on
the 1100 acres Island between Hall
County and Forsyth County. Will
be able to park 634 cats and can
take care of several thousand peo
ple and will help this North Geor
gia area very much.

The Methodist Men’s Club will
hold its regular monthly meeting

j March 12. They won over the For
j syth Bth grade girls in a fine
j game 31 30. They wore some
larger and the smaller guards of
Forsyth could not contain Forward
Reeves who scored 25 of their 31
points. Linda Curtis, Elaine Bagiev
and Diane Martin scored 7 11 12
points respectively, in the loss.
Sherill Walls led the Forsyth
Sth boys in the 29 25 win over
the bigger boys from Friendship
who had a fine first year team.
Forward Jim Callahan scored 11
points to lead his team. Their team
has some fine high school pros
pects
Cumming Elementary had two
good small teams.
Sharon had a fine boys team and
played two fine games. Their girls
were harly as good as the boys,
but shows promise. Chestatee boys
were a well coached team and play
ed well for small boys.
Friendship girls had first year
team and Bernice Bottoms was
one of the best players to compete
and should be a fine high school
player.
The games were well attended
and we congratulate the communi
ties for sponsoring the teams. They
had fine spirit and good sports
manship. All the schools will parti
cipate in the receipts. After Re
ferees and trophies are paid for.
