ADVERTISING COSTS NOTHING
Who pays for advertising?
The answer is: “Successful advertising pays
for itself!”
This is why advertisers in CUMMING should
give thought and study to their printed appeals,
making sure of success.
For example take two stores located in CUM
MING. Both have the same business volume, the
same expense and much the same goods to sell.
One wisely decides to advertise, increase sal
es, cut down the percent of overhead, turn over
goods, eliminate shelf loss and make profit.
The other does not advertise, has fewer sales,
with higher overhead per sale, stagnant goods,
and loses money.
In this case, it is obvious that the advertiser
is out nothing and the nonadvertiser pays.
This example being sufficient of a lesson, the
merchant-reader may ask: “How can I success
fully advertise?”
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is a real
question. It even taxes the brains of an astute
editor, forcing him to admit that he cannot
guarantee any method or system. Advertising
is a sales force that works differently under
different conditions, depending in part on the
personality of the advertiser and the type of
customers to whom he makes his appeal.
CIVIL RIGHTS TO PASS
The surest sign that a civil rights bill will pass
Congress - at this first session of the 86th Con
gress - is the recently expressed opinion of
Senator Richard Russell, Georgia Democrat. As
■the reader probably knows, Senator Russell is
the titular leader of Southerners in the upper
legislative body.
Senator Russell recently told reporters for
Georgia newspapers that he was fairly certain
that no “drastic” civil rights legislation would
be passed by Congress this year.
Russell said this an congressional committees
were considering three different civil rights bills
and a number of others. The three primary
bills are one sponsored by the Republican Ad
ministration, one sponsored by Majority Senatte
Leader Lyndon Johnson, and oe sposored by
two liberal Democratic seators.
In saying only that he felt certain that no
drastic bill would be passed, it seems that Rus
sell is admititing that some bill would be passed.
At least it is a far cry from the fiery opposition
of old days, when bills which were considered
unconstitutional by the Southerners were fought
to the last ditch, and filbusters constantly threat
ened against them.
Instead of threatenin a filibuster, Senator
Russell says that, “I am in hopes that no legis
lation in this field will be passed this year, but
a great deal will depend upon the nature of the
legislation to reach the Eenate.
This from the leader of the Dixie bloc in the
Senate is almost tantamount to admitting that
a civil rights bill will be passed. And. obviously,
Senator Russell believes that Senator Johnson’s
bill will be the bill which passes.
