FORSYTH COUNTY HEALTH
CENTER NEWS
By Grace Palmour, I’HN
Dr. Henry F. Dietrich, writing
for the Home Safety Review, stat
es that the increase in drownings
during the first year children be
gin walking clearly shows that
we are failing to provide the pro
tection needed to save young lives.
In talking with Mr. J. W. Phil
lips, Resevoir Manager of Buford
Dam Project, he stated there were
19 persons drowned in Lake Lan
ier through last year. During the
first quarter of this year 5 per
sons have lost their lives there.
This is before the real season
of recreation begins.
I These consisted of boating acci
dents, walking too close to the
water and falling in, car accidents
and wading or swimming in un
familiar water.
Drowning is listed as the So
:rond highest cause of accidental
deaths in children under 5 years
in the U. S. A. during 1956.
Dr. Dietrich further says that
many times we falsely teach the
very young that they are "un
sinkable” when we say, “watch
baby swim” in loving innocene.
We are teaching him to be ah
solutely unafraid of water. And
when he blithely steps off into
six foot of water and drowns we
simply can’t understand it. Yet for
the first 3 years of life, parents
have extolled the virtues of water,
to the point that, except when it
descends from clouds, water is the
symbol of everything desireable
and clean—and by intimation, good.
The young infant can be taught
respect for, rather than fear of,
or indifference, to the potentiali
ties of water. He can learn that
the human body is not unsinkable.
Let’s keep these facts in mind and
approach this wonderful play
ground, Lake Lanier, in our back
door with the respect due it.
Good material can be found on
this and other safety problems of
interest to all of us in the Home
Safety Review published quarterly
