Self-righteous people often owe their repu
tations to the lack of temptation.
The world is troubled with too many self
apointed agents of the Almighty.
There are few men in public life who retire
at the right time, voluntarily.
Few families understand how hard it is for
the old man to pay the family bills.
It will be bad for the internationalist if the
United States runs out of money.
Successful family life depends upon team
work rather than individual joyrides.
A satisfied customer is one who insists that
you are selling your stuff too cheaply.
After the ambulance takes away the victims,
it is too late to resolve to drive slowly.
The children of this community deserve good
schools and adequate recreation facilities, and
the absence of either is a reflection on the
adults, not children.
AUTOMOBILES AND ENGINES
The announcement by the Ford Motor Com
pany recently that it had developed anew gas
turbine supercharged engine of some 300 h. p.
is of general interest to the automobile and
truck industry, and to the average consumer.
The weight ot the engine is only one-fourth that
of a comparable Diesel engine used in trucks.
It is said that a Diesel truck of comparable
horsepower weights about 2,700 pounds, while
the new Ford gas turbine engine weighs only
about 650 pounds.
Moreover, the new engine will run on unlead
ed gasoline, kerosene, jet engine fuel, or light
Diesel fuel. Moreover, no warm-up period of
the engine is required. For said it will be testing
the new engines in vehicles before the end of
1959.
The announcement of this new engine, which
is said to have been under development for
some two and one-half years, brings tto mind
the various rumors, which occur from year to
year, about anew engine for automobiles. The
influx of foreign-built cars into the United Stat
es, and the decision of the U. S. automobile in
dustry to produce a small car, again focuses
attention on this question.
For the foreign cars are able to get many
more miles per gallon than the larger l . S.
cars, and use low-grade fuels. It seems that the
new Ford gas turbbine engine may eventually
l)e adapted for use in passenger cars, and that
it may cut down the weight of cars considerably
and reduce the expenses of operation consider
ably.
The Ford Motor Company’s announcement
concerning its new gas turbine engie, which
may evetually be used in both trucks and cars,
may be the first step in this direction, and may
herald the beginning of a decisive trend in the
automobile industry.

EGG QUALITY—
With the arrival of warm weath
er, it’s much easier for egg hand
lers to run into trouble with egg
quality. There are several import
ant factors that affect the quality
of eggs. The age of the bird is one.
If it is is over 12 months in lay.
check closely for thin shells and
their whites. New Castle has been
prevalent in some areas. It will
cause thin whites. Pick up eggs
four or five times daily.
In washing eggs, be sure to use
the proper procedures. Use clean
water (110 to 120 degrees), a sani
tized detergent, and wash only the
dirty eggs. Never pack eggs that
are warm. Cool both the egg and
the packing material before casing
eggs. Refrigerate eggs at about 55
degrees with a relative humidity of
75 percent. If cooling facilities are
not available at farm levels, de
liver eggs to processor daily.
WOOL POOL—
Forsyth County vsheep owners
selling wool at the Gainesville wool
pool last Thursday were Carroll
Floyd, Walter Porter, J. S. Ingram,
Edgar Harris and Terry Smith,
j Wool prices are generally about
I five cents per pound higher than
I last year.
OUTDOOR LIGHTING—
Persons who have built an out
door lighting system are frequently
asking how they can keep lights
from attarcting insects. No light
has yet been developed which will
repel all insects, but the color of
light used makes a difference.
Pure white light draws certain
kinds of moths and beetles. Gener
ally, blue and blue-white light at
tracts the most insects. Yellow is
less attractive to insects, and red
seems to be the least visible to
most. Mosquitoes apparently aren’t
particular about color and can be
attracted by mere 25wtt bulb.
Using an aerosol bomb several
times durin gan evening will help
to clear insects from the air. On
screens and around windows a re
sidual spray is helpful. New repel
lents are on the market now which
have no unpleasant odor. They
come in lotion or pressurized spray
form and they give good protection
against mosquitoes and gnats.

EASIER FURNITURE CARE
What is the first step in simpli
fying the task of caring for furni
ture? Miss Hilda Dailey, home
management specialist, Agricultur
al Extension Service, points out
that it is in selecting furniture.
Flat surfaces, straight lines and
smooth edges catch less dust than
furniture with carvings and ridges.
A severe sunburn may result in
infections and a coarse, dry skin,
warns Miss Lucile Higginbotham,
health specialist, Agricultural Ex
tension Service.
When chickens are found badly
mauled and torn, the predator
probably is a dog, declares Dewey
McNiece, poultryman, Agricultural
Extension Service.
