The best way to win an argument is to exhibit

ON GROWING OLD
Growing old is something which sometime is
done graciously and which sometimes is not
done graciously. All of us hope that we will be
able to perform this feat graciously.
Of course, in the United States it is sometimes
hard to be around for the process. With auto
mobile killing several thousand each month,
with so many men working themselves up to a
he?>t attack or a stroke, and with other diseases
taking their toll, it is sometimes difficult to
make the grade.
In the mad scramble to meet deadlines, pay
bills, and keep up with the Joneses, we should
more often take the necessary time to consider
the later years, the real values of life, and the
really, important things tto be concentrated on.
If we will do this, and slow down, and deve
lop a sensible philosphy, we might also live to
be 80, and we might be able to kick up our heels
and go around the world at 88, and see the
sights!
ASKS LOWER DRUG PRICES
Dr. H. Clyde Bowers, president of the New
Jersey Medical Society, recently told a conven
tion of pnarmaeists that drugs they sell should
be reduced in cost. It was an interesting state
ment, and a courageous one, coming from a
doctor.
Among other things, Dr. Bowers said that the
cost of being sick is getting very high, and that
this inflationary condition is not due solely to
the increase of physicians’ fees.
More inflationary has been the increased cost
of hospitalization and drugs, according to the
doctor. And, of the three costs, doctors’ bills,
hospitalization and drugs, the one which can
be decreased in cost, easiest-without adverse
effects-is the cost of drugs, according to Dr.
Bowers.
Bowers suggested that the drug companies
abandon free drug mailings to some 200.000
physicians across the country, which cost the
drug companies a considerable amount ol mon
ey.
We thing most citizens will agree wholeheart
edly with Dr. Bowers’ suggestion. The cost of
drugs is certainly often painfully high.
It is a known fact that many poor families
have a very difficult time in paying for expen
sive drugs, expensive pills, perhaps to the tune
of ten cents per pill. etc. When these drugs, and
this medicine, is vitally needed for the health of
youngsters, or adults, it is a deplorable hard
ship and a regrettable situation when they are
priced so highly.
Therefore, we thing Dr. Bowers’ suggestion
is commendable, and perhaps public sentiment,
swinging behind it. will induce the diue com
panies to do what they can to lower prices.

The best control against the
southern pine beetle is to keep
the trees healthy and vigorous by
frequent thinning, by reducing com
petition for growing room from
other species by removing them
and by cutting timber when it
reaches maturity. Trees which
have been attacked by the insects
should be cut and utilized within
six weeks after the initial insect
attack. If the trees cannot be mark
eted promptly, they should be cut
and sprayed thoroughly with zero
point 25 per cent gamma isomer
of BHC in number two fuel oil.
As for the black turpentine beet
le. his attacks on shade trees may
be prevented by spraying the in
jured trees with zero point five
per cent gamma isomer of BHC
in water, by spraying pine trees
around new building sites prior
to beginning construction and by
preventing injuries to trees. The
roots of the tree should be pro
tected from injury by grading,
ditching or compaction by heavy
equipment. However, if the lawn
and shade trees are already in
fested, they can usually be saved
if they are sprayed with one per
cent gamma BHC in water. The
trees should be watched closely
for the next three weeks. If beetle
activity has not stopped by then,
the trees should be resprayed. The
insecticide should be applied only
when the bark is dry.
