Announces For Board
Member of Commr’s.
I hereby announce as a candi
date for a Member of the Board of
Commissioners of Forsyth County,
subject to the rules and regulations
of the Democratic Primary to be
held March 16, 1960.
As I will not be able to see each
of you during this campaign, I
would like to take this opportunity
to tell you of my platform, and
what I stand for.
Recovering of One-half to One
Million dollars from the U, S.
Government on our Lake Roads.
It appears to me that our Com
missioners either went to sleep or
did not know the cost of road
building, or failed to make a sur
vey of the roads involved, or just
did not care. In short it seems that
the people of Forsyth County have
been taken to the cleaners and
sold down the river, now since our
Commissioners have already settled
with the Government for the small
sum of approximately $100,000.00
and we can not reopen this case
in Gainesville, we will have to go
direct to the Courts of Claims in
Washington, D. C., and prove to
said Courts that the County Com
nX'ssioners and the U. S. Engineers
did error in law in settling for
this small figure. I have talked
with two Law firms and each of
them agree to take this case on a
small percentage at no cost to
the County or any one.
I think we should maintain our
roads first, then if we have the
time and money we should build
new roads where they are needed
most. I do not think the County
should compete with the Contract
ors on our new roads, which comes
under the Rurual Road Authority
and are let to competitive bids. In
our book of the Laws of Georgia,
Act of the Senate and House of
Representatives in setting up our
Board of Commissioners of Roads
and Revenues, it plainly states that
no Commissioner shall enter into a
•ontract with said County, there
fore making it against the law to
be employed by said County, any
one violating this law, in my mind
is subject to impeachment, for
you cannot hire yourself, Act of
1943.
Keen our machinery off private
property, do no work for private
individuals for personal gain.
Raise all County employees sal
ary up to a living wage.
Do what we can for better
schools and buildings.
I think we should lower our Tax
es on the small Home owners and
Raise the large property owners in
proportion with the small ones.
I have 25 years of grading and
road building experience, I have
worked with leading Construction
Companies of the South. I also ser
ved with the Combat Engineers in
World War 11.
I am the Father of 8 children,
5 boys and three girls. I am 51
years of age. I came here in 1951
to work on the Buford Dam, and
after it was finished I decided to
go into the Real-estate business
and make this my home.
If the people of Forsyth County
see fit to honor me with this
office I will do my best to make
this County one to be proud of. I
will carry out and fulfill every
pledge in my platform or I will
go down Swinging.
Thanking you in advance.
Sincerely,
H. H. SCOGGINS

FARM INCOME 1959—60
Agricultural Extension Service
pconc-riists state farm income de
clined in 1959 and may be slightly
lower in 1960. Lower prices, small
er government pavments. and high
er costs are the major reasons for
the sharp decline in net farm in
come. In Georgia, weather was also
a major factor.
Military air transport policies
are assailed.

Announces For Chrm.
County Commissioner
To The People of Forsyth County:
I hereby announce myself as a
j candidate for the office of Chair
man of the Board of Commissioners
of Roads and Revenues of Forsyth
County, subject to the Democratic
Primary to be held,March 16, 1960.
Due to my experience as having
served Forsyth County as County
School Superintendent I feel that
I am better qualified to render a
more valuable service to my Coun
ty at this time. If I am honored
with this office, I pledge to you a
fair and impartial administration,
and will give my full time to the
affairs of this office.
I will cooperate with the State
and County authorities to secure
as much road construction as pos
sible in Forsyth County.
I promise to you there will be
no private roads or private sub
divisions built with county mach
inery at county expense. If the
money that has been spent for
that purpose had been spent wise
ly, every road leading from Cum
ming to Lake Lanier could have
been graded and paved.
I am in favor of a revision of
the Board of Tax Assessors in
Forsyth County. There has been
too much discrimination against
the small land owner. If a man has
been fortunate enough to accumu
late a large amount of property
he should be willing to pay taxes
on it in accordance with the other
tax payers in Forsyth County.
There will be no private con
tracts made with county machinery
in competition with the contractors
in Forsyth County who have pur
chased machinery for that purpose.
I promise to you that all machinery
and equipment purchased by For
svjh County will be purchased on
competitive basis.
I will endeavor to re-open the
claim of Forsyth County against
the Federal Government on the
roads that were covered by Lake
Lanier. I noticed in the Gainesville
Daily Times where Hall County re
ceived $2,500,000.00. Forsyth County
received approximately $90,000.00. I
think it was very unfortunate for
Forsyth County when the Com
missioners settled their claim for
such a small amount. In my opin
ion our County lost at least $500,-
000.00 on the deal.
I shall conduct my campaign on
the principles of honesty, inte
grity and fair play, and if elected
to this position of trust, I shall
at all adhere to these same
nrinciples in serving the people of
Forsyth County to the best of my
ability.
I shall be most grateful for your
vote and influence in this election.
Respectfully yours,
A. R. (Gus) HOUSLEY

ATLANTA (GPS) Despite the fact

(Springfield, Mass.), James H.
Grayy, editor-publisher of the Al
bany Herald, is being hailed by
many Georgians as a worthy suc
cessor to Georgia-born John Sam

Democratic Executive Committee.
Gray is the choice of Gov. Ernest
Vandiver, who appointed Bell to the
Court of Appeals after elevating
Judge Joseph D. Quillian to the
late Justice Lee B. Wyatt’s seat
on the State Supreme Court. His
election is assured.
Like his predecessor, Gray is an
outspoken critic of so-called liber
alism being projected on the nat

strong advocate of states’ rights
and constitutional government.
The 43-year-old former New Eng

how he feels about forced politics
when, as keynote speaker of the
1958 State Democratic Convention,
he told delegates “we must hold
our heads high, join our hands in

Remember God When
You Are Young!
“Remember now thv Creator in
the days of thy youth, while the
evil days come not, nor the years
draw night, when thou shalt say,
I have no pleasure in them".
I believe that we older ones ar?
sometimes disappointing to the
young children. A little child can
be so trusting, so innocent, so pure
in their motives. How thoughtless
and heartless we older ones are if
we do not teach them by precept
and examDle to “remember their
creator”. We must tell them that
God made them! We must tell
them that God loves them and that
we should love God and trust God
all of our lives. We must tell them
that rebellion and disobedience to
God is sin. We must tell them that
wiithout faith in God it is impos
sible to nlease God. Above all we
must tell them how much God
loves each of us so much that
He gave His only begotten Son
that whosoever believeth in Him
should not perish but have eternal
life.
If we parents fail to recognize
the importance of telling our child
ren of the love of God and train
ing them up in the nurture and
admonition of the Lord we will
certainly he held accountable be
fore God in the dav of judgment
What a responsibility we have 9
It causes me to tremble if we
fail to point them to God.
In *his same chapter (the 12th)
of Ecclesiastes the Author savs:
; “Let us hear the conclusion of the
whole matter: Fear (reverence
obey) God, and kkeeo his com
mandments for this is the whole
dutv of man. For God shall bring
everv work into judgment, with
everv secret thing, whether <t be
good, or whether it be evil.”
Tell them of God when they wth
hear and believe before the evil
days come. When their hearts are
voung and tender and pliable, prav
that the spirit of God mav come
in and make his abode. God ble««
our children. When you get old
you will be glad that vou gave
your heart and life to God when
you were voung.

STATE TOURNAMENT
! The State A Tournament begins
in Macon on Monday February 22.
We will play Picken County or
Ellijay girls from Region three.
Their second place team plays our
first place team from Region four.
The hour of the first game will be
announced later.
In the first Region game, our
girls outfought our old rival Win
der to win 44 -26. Elbie, Janet and
Carolyn gave us a big effort in
guarding to field Winder 26 points.
Helen, Shirley and Joy had 21, 18,
5 points.
Our boys lost 31—-32 in a game
with Monroe, showing their defen
sive ability, but their shooting skill
deserted them. Monroe won another
squeaker by one point to qualify
at Macon. It was a bitter defeat,
since the boys had worked hard
to make the Macon trip. James
had 4 points, Russell 6, David 6,
Sam 10 and Charles 5.
In the second round our guards
held the smooth Madison County
team to 31 points, while our for
wards did a good job in shooting
42 points. North Habersham fell
to our losses 20 39 in the Third
game, with a good effort from
every player.
South Heabersham lost to our
girls 35—-40 in the finals. They
\yere large, the largest team we
have played all season. Better ball
handling and good gugrding by
Janet, Elbie and Carolyn, plus a
30 point shooting night for Helen
turned tty; trick. This brought the
Region championship to Forsyth
County girls for the second year*
and a chance at the State Tourna
ment.
Our boys ended the season with
a respectable average of 16 wins
and ten losses.
The girls had a fine season with
a 27 win column and four losses
and the Region trophy, plus gold
basket balls for the team.
Helen Gilbert scored 96 points in
the four games. Her work was on
a par with Carolyn, Elbie and
Janet’s fine guarding.

I have written this over and over
again in news articles, but at the
risk of boring some of you who
keep up with the immunizations
your children need, I am going t<v
repeat it again.
Your private physician will tell
you that the only reason we have
any of the communicable disease
that immunizations are provided
against, is simply through careless
ness and neglect on the part of
parents. You can’t expect a child
to request you to carry them to
the Health Center or their doctor
and have them immunized. There
are several logical reasons for their
not wanting Immunizations. First,
you may have threatened them
with a "shot” if theyy didn’t take
some other medicine at a time
they were not feeling good. Se
cond, because they think it will
hurt they aren’t going to want to
go. Third, they aren’t capable of
reasoning within themselves the
advantage of protection against
disease.
We as parents have to take the
initiative and do some things that
we know are necessary for our
childrens well being withoiit wait
ing for them to realize the need
for them.
It is aeain time for vou parents
with children who will start to
school this fall term to get them
ready for school entrance. They
must have certain immunizations
as well as a birth certificate be
fore they can be enrolled in school.
Begin now and be prepared when
your school has preschool round-up.
