Chestatee High News
By John Garner
Chestatee coral groups each
gave two selections last Sunday
night at Pleasant Grove Church.
The church was well attended
and the congregation seemed to
enjoy the selections very much.
We are proud of the progress
these groups have made. I be
lieve this type of training is
very valuable to our young peo
ple. Unfortunately not enough
people think this way. At least
no public funds are available for
training of this type. Let us hope
that in the future provisions will
be made for such training.
Now that the Governor’s pro
posals for improving education
have become law as well as sup
porting revenue bills many peo
ple are very anxious to see the
“fine print’’ so to speak. We are
most anxious to what effects
it will have on our own county
school system. I am personally
interested in the provisions deal
ing with teacher load and ad
ministrative personnel. We at
Chestatee have seven teachers
teaching over - sized classes.
The accrediting cojrjpiissipa.
frowns on such practices.
Under the present system no
allowance is made for principals,
librarians, counselors, or coach
es. When any one of these peo
ple are working at these duties
some other teacher must teach
extra students. This creates a
problem that is almost impossible
to solve. The business affairs of
a school must be managed, stu
dents need and are entitled to
counseling, and library service.
It is my hope that some of these
problems can be solved by pro
visions in the new laws.
Last Thursday night our Jun
ior girls won a close game with
Matt by a score of 22-24. The
boys were able to win by a
greater margin and keep the
perfect record for this year. Last
Friday night our varsity team
traveled to Jackson County. Our
girls were able to win by a
comfortable score but our boys
lost to the fine Jackson County
boys. These boys are extremely
good. They have one of the best
“all around” teams I have seen
in years.
Our tournaments will be played
at Buford this year. The team
with the best record in region
competition will he given th e
first position. The fourth best
team will be given the opposite
side of the same pring or side
of the bracket. The second and
third place teams will be given
positions on the opposite side of
the bracket. This prevents the
two teams with the best records
from meeting until the last of
the tournament. Your season rec
ord is of little other help. Your
progress in the tournaments de
pends on your performance on
a given night. That is the rule
of the game.
This coming Sunday, Feb. 9,
1964, the Chestatee School facili
ties will be used a one of the
centers for giving the Oral Sabin
Serum for the prevention of polio
myelitis. This polio serum is giv
en on a small cube of sugar
for most people. For small chil
dren the nurse will give the ser
um by dropping three drops into
its mouth. The serum itself is
tasteless and will cause no re
action.
The school building will open
at 11 next Sunday morning and
will remain open until 5 o’clock.
There will be a doctor and a
nurse on duty to supervise giving
the vaccine. Other volunteer peo
ple will be on duty to assist peo
ple in any way possible. There
is no cost or price placed
on the vaccine. You will be given
an opportunity to donate 25 cents
or more to help cover the cost
of the serum.
You will be asked to register
for the serum. The Health De
partment wants to know how

many people and what age groups
take the serum. The forms are
not complicated. Forms will be
given to our students later this
week. If the family will register
before coming to the center it
will save you a few minutes time.
If you forget to register on one
of these forms there will be a
supply at the center and volun
tary helpers to assist you if you
desire it. In short the whole
family can register and take the
vaccine in only a short time.
There are three distinct types
of polio. You will be able to get
vaccine for all three types at
the school house. Vaccine for
type one will be given this
Sunday, type two one month
later and type three in April.
This oral vaccine gives protec
tion from all three types of polio
and also prevents you from being
a carrier of these dreaded germs.
The Salk vaccine, given by
injection, will protect you from
having polio but does not keep
you from being a carrier. In
other words, if you have had
the Salk shots you can still be
a carrier.
-K you have had the shots and
want to be protected from being
a carrier you can take the oral
serum with no reaction. In short
if you have had one or more
Salk vaccines, and cannot re
member if you have protection
from all three types of polio you
can take the oral serum. This
will give you protection from all
types of polio as well as protec
tion from being a carrier. I feel
that we as parents owe our
children this protection and shou
be protected ourselves. May I
take this means to urge everyone
to get this protection from polio
and provide your children with
protection.
It sure takes money to "make
the scene" at college!
And that's the truth! Tuition bills were never higher.
And all those little "extras" that add so much to col
lege life. . .they cost more, too! Which is why so many
smart youngsters start doing something about it, in
their high school days. What they do is save system
atically here from their part-time earnings (even their
allowances) so that when the time comes, they'll "have
what it takes!"

Workers Waging "War* on Roads
ATLANTA Highway Depart
ment maintenance crews have
fought three major encounters in
their annual battle with Old Man
Winter, and are bracing them
selves for their crafty opponent's
next sortie.
Each year, the howling inva
der sweeps down through North
traffic and posing the threat of
serious damange to the state’s
road network. And each year
the men and machines of the
Highway Department’s mainte
nance division launch an immedi
ate counterattack with ice plows,
sand, calcium chloride, and ra
dio-coordinated patrol teams.
Winter’s weapons are snow,
sleet, landslides and fallen tim
bers to paralyze traffic; and bit
ing cold to turn sub-surface wa
ter into an insidiously expanding
“Fifth Column,” attacking road
way, cuts, and fills from beneath
and within.
After the soil has frozen to a
depth of 10 to 15 inches, it be
comes expanded and loosened con
siderably upon thawing. This
looseness promotes slides on cuts
and fills, and with the roadway
base loosened, heavy traffic can
damange the surfacing severely.
This why an accurate estimate
of each winter’s damage cannot
be made until after the final
spring thaw.
Though the battle zone for this
winter warfare is chiefly limited
to the counties north of Atlanta,
it can spill over into the central
and southern sections of the state.

Gwinnett To Receive Aid
For Conservation Program
WASHINGTON - Georgia’s
Gwinnett County is designated as
one area in 11 states to receive
Soil Conservation Service assist
ance in a resource conservation
and development program. Con
gressman Phil Landrum was in
formed that some 279,688 acres
of land will be involved in the
project. Local sponsors include
Gwinnett County Commissioners
and the Upper Ocmulgee Soil
and Water Conservation District.
Objectives of the project. Rep.
Landrum said, include:
1. Development of a long-range
plan for the orderly development
of the area;
2. Industrial development to fit
the natural and labor resources
of the area;
3. A w'oodland inventory and
survey of potential for wood-us
ing industry;
4. Acceleration of soil survey
work to provide a planning base
for land use changes;
5. Coordination of transporta
tion planning:
6. Technical assistance to land
owners and operators to help
them effect changes in land use
and enterprise and plan for prop
er treatment of the land.
Benefits expected from the
project, Landrum said, include:
1. A coordinated plan to insure
orderly, sound land conversion
and economic adjustment;
2. Opportunities for family
farms to change from low de
mand commodities to those in
demand by the Atlanta region;
3. Public and private recrea
tional development.
the rolling curves between Bu
ford and Suwanee and at the
Southern Railway bridge at Chi
copee on U.S. 23, between Clay
ton and Hiawassee on U.S 76,
and on U.S. 41 between Dalton
and Ringgold. Bridges generally
are favorite spots for the ice to
attack.
At only one point has the igh
way Department given ground to
the enemy. This is on U.S. 76
across Fort Mountain between
Chattsworth and Ellijay. Because
no one lives near the crest of
the mountain, and because those
on the slopes have access to
shores, hospitals, etc. in either
Chatsworth or Ellijay, traffic a
cross the mountain virtually stops
in winter. Accordingly, after us
ing two carloads of calcium chlo
ride on this eight-mile icy stretch
wthout success in the winter of
1962, the department now merely
closes the road when ice blocks
it.
Elsewhere, the Highway De
partment’s battle cry is “Keep
the traffic moving, and the dam
age as light as possible." As in
a more spectacular “cold war,”
their opponent’s seems to be
“We’ll bury you!”
During the truce that comes
with spring, both sides quietly
prepare for the renewal of the
clash. Weathering and the pound
ing of traffic crack the roadway’s
protective coat to make it more
vulnerable to winter’s weapons,
and fall rains seep underground
where winter’s falling tempera
tures can give them vicious de
structive power.
A resource conservation and
development project is one lo
cally initiated and sponsored. It
is aimed at carrying out a pro
gram of land conservation and
land utilization “in an area where
acceleration of the current con
servation activities plus the use
of new authorities will provide
additional economic opportunities
to its people,” according to the
Soil Conservation Service.
“Gwinnett County is rapidly
changing from a predominately
rural area to a rural-urban com
plex. This project is going to do
much to facilitate the change in
an orderly fashion and help in
sure the development of every po
tential,” Congressman Landrum
said.
