Make Your Oat Crop
Year a Paying One
By WALTER H. RUCKER
I County Agent
During October many Forsyth
County farmers will be plant
ing oats for grain. Although this
is August, may I urge you to
consider several things before
October gets here, so that this
year’s oat crop will be a paying
one for you.

There are certain varieties
that are better suited for For
syth County than others, so first
may I suggest that you be sure
to select one of these. Morgrain,
Roanoke, Fairfax and Sumter
are all recommended for the
Forsyth County area.
As for the rate of seeding, you
will need to use two bushels.
Remember, for grazing purposes
it is best to use four bushels, but
two is enough for grain.
Follow your soil test recom
mendation for your particular
farm, however, a general recom
mendation is for 300 to 500
pounds of 5-10-15 or 6-12-12 per
acre. Many Forsyth County soils
are low in potash so the 5-10-15
is generally better. We can only
be sure by having a soil test
made of your particular field.
Top-dressing needs should be
supplied with around 40 to 60
pounds of actual nitrogen per
''■/ Jk v'wPH
acre. This amounts to about
250 to 400 pounds of nitrate of
soda or 125 to 200 pounds of
ammonium nitrate per acre.
Start your oat crop by using
clean, certified, treated seed of
the recommended variety.
Winter Grazing
With many Forsyth County
livestock owners having to buy
hay to carry them through the
rough winter last year, a good
percentage of them will be plant
ing a winter grazing mixture to
help tide the cattle over during
the cold weather. A good mix
ture of plant consists of 3 bush
els of oats or rye, 20 pounds of
annual ryegrass and 20 pounds
of crimson clover.
This mixture should be seed
ed here in Forsyth County as
near September first as possible.
Of course this will depend upon
the season in the ground of the
soil moisture. A soil test should
be made to determine the right
kind and amounts of fertilizer to
use but the general recommen
dations are to use 400 to 600
pounds of a 5-10-15 or 6-12-12
fertilizer per acre. Of course you
should add lime if needed. Again
only a soil test will tell. This
winter grazing should be top
dressed with 80 to 100 pounds of
actual nitrogen per acre.
As always you should plant
clean, certified, treated seed. The
clover seed should be inoculated
before planting.
Corn Silage
Some Forsyth County livestock
owners have constructed and are
using pit silos to store feed for
their catt.e Others are planning
to construct a pit during the sum
mer. If yu are included in this
group then I hope that you in
tend to turn some of your corn
crop into silage this year for
the livestock on your place.
You know, corn silage has
many advantages. It is high in
feeding value per pound and
there is little resistance from
the cow when it comes time for
her to feed on it.
If you want to compare corn
silage with grass silage, you can
assume that it usually takes one
and one half to two pounds of
grass silage to equal one pound
of corn silage.
A good program to follow this
winter with your corn silage is
to feed your milkers or steers
a full feed of corn silage with
one or two hours of grazing on
the best winter grazing available.
For good corn silage you should
harvest the corn by the soft
dough stage. This will help in
sure better silage for your live
stock.

Sweet Potatoes Are Ideal
For Rounding Out a Meal
Sweet potatoes are ideal for
that serving of dark green or
deep yellow vegtables you need
each day.
This vegetable furnishes many
of the nutrients which helps you
meet your daily food needs. A
medium-size sweet potato, or one
weighing about six ounces, pro
vides about twice your daily
vitamin A requirement and a
bout one-third the day’s vitamin
C need. Sweet potatoes also con
tribute some calcium, iron, thi
amine, riboflavin, and niacin.
Carbohydrates and fat in sweet
potatoes are economical sources
of energy. There are about 155
calories in a medium-size sweet
potato.
In choosing sweet potatoes, se
lect those that are smooth and
plump. Fresh, bright, dry, and
clear ones are the best buy. To
avoid waste and off-flavors, don’t
buy potatoes that have decay
spots. For uniform cooking and
flavor, select those that are sim
ilar in color and shape.
“Sewing Setting”
For best results in sewing, you
will profit by following certain
recommendations.
For instance, arrange your
sewing machine, small equip
ment and pressing equipment
within easy reach. A U-shaped ar
rangement is convenient. Be sure
you have comfortable cutting,
pressing and sewing heights. Use
a good light that comes over
your left shoulder.
Carpet Facts
Soiling is an important con
sideration in choosing a car
pet. Different fibers may be
chosen for different rooms be
cause of their resistance to soil.
For instance, rayon carpets
tend to soil rather quickly.
Therefore, they would be a bet
ter choice for a spot such as
bedrooms that do not have a
great deal of traffic.
Acrylics tend to soil at a con
ventional rate and soil evenly.
Nylon soils only on the top layer
and if this is removed all of the
soil is gone. If it isn’t removed,
it appears to soil more quickly.
Along with soiling, it should
be pointed out that some of the
man-made fibers have some ad
vantages in the ara of clean
ing. Since these fibers hold very

beginning September 1, 1964.
These are annual elections and
this year the voting will again
be by mail, according to the
Forsyth ASCS County Office
Manager.
Between July 31 and August 11,
the county office will mail bal
lots to all eligible voters on rec
ord. Any farmer who does not
receive his ballot promptly sho
uld contact the county office and
obtain one.
Full instructions will be furni
shed voters along with the ballot.
Voters will be asked to vote for
5 persons. After voting, the bal
lot will first be sealed in a blank
envelope bearing no identifica

pre-addressed envelope (requir
ing no postage) for mailing, or
personal delivery to the county
office.
Write-in votes will be permit
ted. However, the overall total
of persons voted for including
write-ins, must not exceed 5 or
the ballot will be void. Last year
Georgia farmers led the nation
with a 73.3 per cent participation.
Forsyth County had a particip
ation of 84.7 per cent.
The community and county
committees will make the nom
inations for this year’s elections.
The county committee will meet
on August 24 for the purpose of
counting the votes and officially
announcing the results. The per
son receiving the most votes will
be community committee chair
man and delegate to the county
convention, the second highest
will be Vice-Chairman, and the
third highest, regular member.
The vice - chairman and reg
ular member will be alternates
to the county convention. The
first and second alternates will
likewise be chosen by the num
ber of votes received. The elec
ted community committee chair
men, as delegates, will meet in
a county convention on August
28 to elect the county committee.
All committeemen will take of
fice on September 1, 1964. All
persons who are participating,
or are eligible to participate, in
any of the ASC Programs are
eligible to vote.
Watch Your Trees
For Bark Beetles
This is the time of year to be
on the lookout for insect damage
to pine trees, a Cooperative Ex
tension Service forester remind
ed homeowners this week.
Dorsey Dyer of the University
of Georgia said it’s important
to remember that pines are not
usually damaged by any great
number of different insects.
“Most insect damage,” he ex
plained, “will be done by the
bark beetles and the Nantucket
pine tip moth.”
There are three kinds of bark
beetles turpentine, Ips, and
Southern pine. All three are
small and are dark brown to
black in color.
little moisture, they are more
easily cleaned than natural fib
ers.
Rayon stains most easily and
holds stains worse. Nylon holds
stain some, but may be worked
to remove them. Polyporpylene
and the acrylics are least ab
sorbent and therefore most com
pletely cleaned.
Always clean a carpet before
it shows soiling if you want to
keep its bright color and spot
less appearance.

Groups Hold Meeting
By J.T. Coots
Cecil W Chapman, State Con

meetings of Soil Conservation
District Supervisors this month.
District Supervisors and we in
Soil Conservation Service are
looking forward to the series of
Group Meetings to be held tbro
ghout the state in August. The
them “Opportunities for Using
Georgia Land For Income Pro

larly timely and important.
Each year more and more resi
dents of our rapidly expanding
metropolitan areas are heading
for the country for a bit of rec

they’re willing to pay for the
privilege. This is important to
landowners because it opens up
to them the possibilities for an

If you’re just sitting around
with nothing better to do, you
