GEORGIA’S OLDEST CHURCH Historic Jerusalem Church
at Ebenezer in Effingham County north of Savannah is the only
Colonial public building left standing in Georgia. Occasional
services here provide the ghost town's sole link to its years as a
thriving village. The antiquated building (1767) is used
occasionally as a place of worship by descendants of the
Salzburgers who erected it. (PRN)
ATLANTA (PRN) - For a
one day fun trip through
history take a driving tour
northwest of Savannah. You
start by taking Georgia
Highway 21 northwest from
Savannah.
Your first brush with
history occurs near the little
town of Rincon,
approximately 30 miles
northwest of your starting
point. By taking an 8-mile
(one-way) detour on Georgia
275 (a dead-end road) you can
explore one of the earliest
settlements in the peach state
-- the towns of Ebenezer and
New Ebenezer. They were
settled in 1733 by religious
refugees from Augusburg,
Germany. Today, the only
physical reminders are the old
cemetery’ with its intriguing
headstones, and the still active
Jerusalem Luthem Church.
The church was built between
1767 and 1769 of brick with
21-inch thick walls.
Returning to Georgia 21,
you continue to Sylvania en
route to Millen. Many prefer
to drive a few miles east on
U.S. 301 to the first welcome
center built in Georgia.
It’s only 19 miles from
Sylvania to Millen where you
can sample two state parks,
Lincoln and Magnolia Springs,
the latter and the most
famous, was once the site of a
prison camp built to replace
overcrowded Andersonville.
However the war ended before
the new prison was fully
activated. Magnolia Springs
State Park centers around the
springs of the same name, and
adjoins the Federal fish
hatchery which is open to the
public. Aquatic stars of the
hatchery are the albino
catfish. Magnolia Springs has
both camp sites and rental
cabins.
If you really want to
explore around Millen, seek
local directions and wend your
way down tree-lined, country
roads to the famous Jones
Plantation at Birdsville.
Today, the gently weathering
manor house, built in the
1780’s, with its well-worth
flanking buildings gives little
hint of its past importance.’
Once this was the nerve center
of a sprawling plantation, ah
important stagecoach stop oh
the road from Savannah to
Louisville when the latter was
capital of Georgia, and even
had a post office. But time has
marched past. The plantation
house is still occupied by
descendants of the original
18th century builder.
Returning to Georgia 17,
you continue to historic
Louisville, one-time capital of
Georgia, where the Yazoo
fraud papers were burned in
the late 19th century, pausing
to stop at the old slave market
dating from the 1700’s. On
display is a bell originally sent
to a convent in New Orleans
by the king of France, but
which fell into pirate hands
when they looted the ship.
Undoubtedly, the king was
very angry, but the bell never
reached New Orleans in the
days when it was the capital of
New France.
You turn southward at
Louisville on U.S. 1 and in 30
miles you’re in Swainsboro,
site of Yam Grandy State
Park, and your next route
change city.
