Rabies Schedule Announced For Forsyth County
Thirty-three Georgia co
unties reported cases of animal
rabies last year, County Agent
Walter Rucker said this week
in calling attention to the rabies
clinics coming up in Forsyth
County May 10.
Cases were reported in dogs,
cats, horses, foxes, bats, and
skunks, he continued. “Fort
unately, there were no human
deaths, but this is no reason to
become lax about rabies.' ’
The county agent pointed out
that once the virus enters the
body and symptoms develop,
rabies is always fatal. “There
is no cure,’’ he declared, “so
it is obvious that prevention is
the only answer.’’
And one of the major phases
of a prevention program is the
vaccination of all dogs.

To accomplish this purpose
is the reason the rabies clinics
are being held in Forsyth Co
unty.
One thing that promotes the
special vaccination campaign
here was the severe epidemic
of rabies in foxes in Tennessee
last year. Also, several Ge
orgia counties reported cases
of rabies in bats and raccoons
last summer.
“It is hoped,’’ according to
Mr. Rucker, “that the vaccina
tion of all dogs will create a
buffer zone between the wild
life population and the human
population and prevent any re
lated rabies outbreak in Geor
gia.’’
Because rabies in dogs has
gradually quieted down since the
outbreak in the mid 1950’5, the
county agent believes people
have become lax about vaccina
tion. “But dogs are the most
likely link between the problem
of rabies in wildlife and the
human population,” he said.
“We must break the chain by
having a high percent of our
dogs immune.”
Mr. Rucker continued that no
one can predict the year a ravies
outbreak will come. “We don’t
know if the raccoon problem in
South Georgia or the bat prob
lem in North Georgia will get
worse, or if the Tennessee fox
rabies epidemic will descend
upon us.”
“The safe thing,” the county
agent continued, “is to vac
cinate our dogs every year.
When you gamble with rabies,
everybody loses. The disease
is always fatal. No amount of
penicillin or mycin or any other
drug will slow down the march
of the virus to the brain—and
, |
ultimate death.”
Senior interns from the Uni
versity of Georgia School of
Veterinary Medicine and Dr.
Larr y Gilbert, local veterin
arian,will man the clinics here
in Forsyth County on May 10.
They will be assisted by 4-H
Club members and local volun
teer leaders.
The 4-H’ers are now busy
putting up posters, passing out
handbills, and publicizing the
upcoming clinics in other ways.
In addition to helping with an
important public health prob
lem, the 4-H boys and girls
are also raising money for
their treasury. They will get
25? of the $1.75 fee for each
dog vaccinated.
The County Helath Depart
ment, Cooperative Extension
Service, and the Georgia Veter
inary Medical Association are
cooperating in the special cam
paign.
