The Editor’s Desk
There is an urgent need in Forsyth County for emergency
shelter care homes to aid in the short-term emergency care
of children faced with immediate removal from their own
homes and families due to a family crisis, such as sickness
or death, abuse, abandonment, or desertion. With no place
else to go, these innocent children must often be placed in
Juvenile Detention Homes along with youthful offenders or
even in public jails.
Emergency shelter care is a specialized program designed
to meet the temporary emergency needs of these children.
These private homes and substitute parents must keep their
doors opened 24 hours per day for a 30 day period for each
child. There is seldom an opportunity to prepare either the
parent or the child for placement, and usually the child is
upset by the sudden move.
While the receiving family is charged with the important
responsibility of adding love, care, and understanding, the State
and County Department of Family and Children Services helps
relieve the financial burdens involved. Families who offer
their hearts and homes are paid at the rate of sls a month
for each approved available bed plus $3 per day for each child.
In addition, the county pays for needed clothing, medical and
dental care.
By opening your home as an emergency shelter care home for
your county you can render a needed and valuable service to
your community by providing a place for children often
dirty, scared, and sick, t go during the period of crisis.
Couples interested in the emergency shelter care program
and desiring more information are asked to contact the Forsyth
County Department of Family and Children Services at P. O. Box
21, Cumming, Georgia 30130 or phone 887-2449.
Many Visitors
As the Army’s Corps of Engineers readies itselffor the sum
mer’s throngs of recreation seekers at its man-made lakes,
recently compiled figures show that attendance last year reached
the record-breaking total of 227.5 million visits--23.5 million
more than the previous all-time high registered in 1967.
These figures include only the attendance at major lakes.
Recrewtional use of small-boat harbors, marinas, canals, and
other waterways provided by the Corps of Engineers has not
been estimated, but is believed to be at least equally great.
The enthusiastic manner in which the American people have
utilized the recreation facilities which the Congress of the United
States has authorized as part of Corps of Engineers reservoir
projects is indicated by the substantial year-by-year increases
in attendance figures.
There were 109 million visitors to these projects in 1960,
and 227.5 million in 1968.
Visits in excess of one million were recorded at 74 projects
last year. The top attraction, Lake Sidney Lanier in Georgia,
is now nearing the ten million mark in attendance.
The total number of visitors to Lake Lanier in 1968 was
9,324,800, and ten million visitors are anticipated in 1969.
* Parks and water-related recreation facilities are available
at 267 man-made lakes operated by the Army Corps of Engi
neers throughout the United States. Available to thepublic are
picnic grounds , camp grounds, tent and transient trailer spa
ces, parking areas, swimming beaches, boat-launching lanes,
sanitary facilities, foot trails, and rental boats. Roads, parking
areas, water supply and other basic facilities are generally
provided by the Federal Government, while State and local gov
ernments and private concessionaires are encouraged to further
develop the areas for use by the general public. As an over-all
average, non-Federal interests in the past have invested more
than $2 for every $1 of Federal investment in park or recreation
faculties.
Information on the specific facilities available at each project
is available from the project offices, from Division and District
offices of the Corps of Engineers, and from the Office of the
Chief of Engineers, U. S. Army, Washington, D. C. 20315,
