Income Tax
This column of questions and
answers on federal tax matters
is provided by the local office
of the U.S. Internal Revenue
Service and is published as a
public service to taxpayers.
The column answers questions
most frequently asked by tax
payers.
QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Q. Should you bring a tax
expert with you when you are
called in for an audit?
A. Professional tax help is
usually not needed during the
examination of a return. How
ever, you may bring someone to
represent you if you wish.
The reason for examining a
return is to determine whether
it is accurate and complete.
To do this, you should have ty
To do this, you should have the
records to back up the items
and amounts shown on your
return.
Q. Are death benefits from
a life insurance policy taxable?
A. Lump sum life insurance
proceeds paid because of death
ar e not considered taxable
income unless the policy was
transferred to you for a val
uable consideration. However,
if the benefits are paid in in
stallments a portion may be
taxable as interest.
This and other aspects of
insurance payments are expl
ained in IRS Publication 525,
"Taxable Income and Nontax
able Income.” Send a post card
to your District Director for
a free copy.
Q. Our daughter works after
school. Can she claim an ex
emption for herself on this job
if I’m also claiming has as
my dependent?
A. Yes, she may claim her
own withholding exemption and
you ca n continue to claim her
as long as she qualifies as
your dependent. She is also en
titled to claim herself when
she files an income tax return
next year.
Q. Can you deduct anything
for employment agency fees?
A. Fees paid to an employ
ment agency for securing a job
are deductible when you itemize,
your deductions.
Q. I use my country club to
entertain some of my cus
tomers. Am I allowed any de
duction for my club fees and
expenses?
A. Your business lunches at
the country club would be de
ductible just as a business lunch
any place would be. Other enter
tainment expenses at the club
may also qualify.

Social Security
In an effort to speed the
payment of retirement checks,
the Gainesville Social Security
office today announced a new
service to folks over 55 years
of age. The office urges that
proof of age for social security
be obtained in advance of re
tirement.
“Most of the delay in pay
ment of the first check when a
worker retires is due to pro
blems in proving age,” says
Cecil W. Collins, Social Se
curity District Manager. “By
making sure your age is es
tablished ahead of time, you can
help the social security folks
get that first check on time.”
Since there were no birth re
cords in this State before 1919,
folks over 51 will have to use
some other good proof.
If there is no old family
reocrd, or a record made in
early adult life, the office at
425 Bradford Street in Gaines
ville will assist anyone in or
dering a record from a Fed
eral census made in childhood.
Collins said that 1910 and 1920
A portion of your annual club
dues may be deducted if you
use the country club more than
50 percent of the time for
business purposes. Member
shop or initiation feespaidonce
for membership privileges are
generally considered a capital
expense and are not deductible.
To show you use the club more
than half the time for business
purposes, keep a record of the
days you and your family use
the club’s facilities, and indi
cate whether for business or
personal purposes.
If you use the club for both
business and personal purposes
on the same day, it counts
as a da y of business use.
Club dues are discussed in
Publication 463, “Travel, En
tertainment and Gift Expen
ses.” For a free copy, send a
post card to your District Di
rector.

TRAVELERS FINANCIAL PLANNER
My brother and I are identical twins —with totally
different points of view. He’s conservative. I like J W
adventure. We are both doing well, salary wise •Uijli
in our first jobs. We each contribute to the sup- * *|fl||
port of our parents, who are not financially inde- V . jj|l
pendent. Here’s the problem: my brother says
we should start a definite retirement plan now. |||
I say people in their twenties have time to worry
about the sixties. Who’s right? The settled twin? Or the swing
ing twin?
A.H. and R.H.
A.
Sorry. Our field is finance —not fraternal feuds. But it seems
to us you’ve answered your own question. If your mother and
father had not delayed the day of looking ahead to future
needs, you wouldn’t be paying the price of their present se
curity. It’s never too soon to start building a solid groundwork
against the intangibles and uncertainties of tomorrow. (We’re
thinking of a couple who started a sound program at 22 . . . re
tired at 55, and bought a house in ski country while they were
still young and limber enough to enjoy their favorite sport to
the fullest.) And we understand twins run in families. So don’t
wait until your own identical pair has to figure out who’ll take
on the task of paying your bills at some future date!
Q.
Our women’s club meetings have just about had their fill of Japanese
flower arrangements and endless fashion shows. This is a highly
intelligent cross-section of homemakers and career women; young
and middle-aged marrieds, divorcees and singles. How can we enlist
a qualified financial expert to discuss future planning? It’s a subject
of vital interest that we all know too little about!
Mrs. J.M.S.
A.
It’s all too true that women—who earn a staggering percentage
of the country’s income—and control the purse strings for mil
lions of dollars of family expenditure—are often excluded when
it comes to the dollars and cents discussion of retirement in
come. A question-and-answer forum might clear up many
details for your members. Discretionary spending—your money
margin after monthly bills are paid—can make the difference
between a secure tomorrow. Or a rocky one. For your personal
piece of mirtd, we’d suggest a meeting with a local Travelers
Financial Planner. And it’s always possible you may persuade
this same financial expert to brave that perfumed wave of
ladies ... and deliver some really qualified advice about how to
build toward a safer, more secure tomorrow.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
ABOUT SOCIAL SECURITY
Q. I have a woman who works
for me 3 days a week and she
works for another person 3
days a week. They take out
social security on her. She
tells me that I don’t have to
take out social security on her
because they do. Is she right?
A. No. It doesn’t make any
difference how many people she
works for. Each person she
works for must report her
wages if she is paid SSO in a
calendar quarter.
Q. Why did the social se
curity office send me a letter
asking me to apply for Medicare
and social security benefits
when I’m still working full time?
A. Actually they wanted to
advise you that you could enroll
for Medicare because the re
cords show that you are or soon
will be 65. Medicare benefits
are available to everyone at
age 65 even if they are working
full time. You should apply for
Medicare benefits 3 months be
fore you are 65 to have the pro
tection when you reach 65. If
you wait too long, you may miss
out on the coverage for a year
or more.
Q. I am still working and will
be age 65 in December. When
should I apply for social sec
urity and what papers should
I take with me when I do apply?
A. You should file for your
social securtiy and Medicare
within three months prior to
you birthday month-Sept. Ist
thru November 30th. It is very
important to apply within this
3 month period in order to have
full protection under Medicare
effective December Ist. It would
be helpful if you bring your So
cial Security card, a birth or
baptismal certificate to prove
your age, all your Form W
-2’s for 1968 and be able to give
an approximate figure on your
total expected earnings in 1969.
