Pesticides Aid Food Supply By: Walter H. Rucker In recent Senate hearings on pesticides it was concluded: »The food supply of the U.S. is the envy of the world . . The critical assurance that these abundant crops ca n be profitably grown, harvested and stored is due to pest control— with chemical pesticides." According to th e United Na tions, the single most important thing countries can do to in crease food production is to ex pand their use of pesticides. Ch emicals alone can mean the difference between starvation and survival for millions. Yes, pesticides play an im portant part and are destined to be even more important in the future. The world's population is al ready over 3 billion and growing rapidly. Hunger is a constant companion in many nations that do not have the modern agri cultural technology that we take NEED EXTRA CHRISTMAS CASH ? ? ? ? ? With the use of pesticides to control weeds, diseases and in sects, one U.S. farmer is now able to produce enough food and fiber for himself and 43 others. Without the use of these "crop and chemicals," such produc tion would not be possible. With out pesticides, losses to insects and diseases would be much higher. And so would food costs, higher. And so would food costs. HISBSR - MHraIHHHIH mr* m i fp |§; . ' ‘l - i Jni ■■ ATTEND BALL Mr. and Mrs. Jackson M. Butler entertained Mr. and Mrs. Morris Crain at the annual Harvest Ball, Atlanta Atheletic Club,Nov. 6,1969. Mr. Butler is owner of Forsyth Ins. Agency in Cumming. The Butlers are building on Lake Lanier and will be moving to Cumming by the end of this year. They have four children, Morry, Terry, Jack, Jr. and Sherry - all of whom will be entering school in Forsyth County STORING PECANS In-shell pecan nuts can be stored successfully for 18 months at 32 to 36 degrees Fahrenheit. At zero degrees F. the storage life may be extended to 6-10 years. Tests have shown that shelled halves remain fresh for 12 months at 32 to 36 degrees. The sma ller the pieces, the shorter the storage life. You can store small quanti ties of pecans at home by pl acing them in deep freeze either whole, cracked or sh elled. Remember, pecans absorb odors readily. So they should no t be stored near onions, or anges, etc. Strong odors of wood, ammonia, paint and as pahlt can also be taken up by the pecan kernels. Of course, storage never im proves quality. At best, proper storage only enables pecans to maintain their present qualtiy. I§i DOLLARS AND GOOD SENSE By: William J. Martin This column is a regular weekly feature prepared by the Family Financial Counseling Service of the Avco Delta Cor poration, P.O. Box 859, Cleve land, Ohio 44122. All ques tions submitted to the above address will be answered in pring or by return mail. Names will not be used in print. How ever, all questions should be accompanied by a complete name and address. Dear Mr. Martin: Are warr anties and guarantees worth the paper they’re printed on? I had an experience recently with the dealer where I bought my new car that leads me to believe otherwise. Mr. 8.D.: Reputable manufac turers and certainly in your case, automobile manufactur ers, stand behind their guar antees and warranties. They must or suffer from some bad public relations and perhaps, legal action. Often, the trouble falls in that middle ground be tween manufacturer and con sumer. Anyone having difficulty with a certain dealer, no mat ter what the product, should write directly to the manuf acturer, with a copy to the de aler. Usually, manufacturers are anxious to learn about any problems concerning their de alership. Sometimes, you may be sur prised at the results. A case in point concerned a lady who wrote me recently stating that her faith had been restored in a certain company. When the product did not perform to her satisfaction and to the manu facturer’s advertised claim, she wrote the company. They quickly refunded her money and urged her to continue using their product. . .which she in- YOU'LL DO BETTER AT. . In this case, however, the lady was dealing directly with the manufacturer and I suspect that she wasn’t using it exactly according to the instr uctions. I also suspect that the company knew this too. There is a psychology behind the guarantee. For one thing it’s an excellent sales promotion gi mmick. And for another, man ufacturers know that most peo ple who are not totally diss atisfied, for example, will not bother to take the time and trouble to write, package and return the product to the man ufacturer. I’ve always maintained and advocated that if you’re unhappy with a product . . .let the peo ple who sold it ... or made it. . . .know about it. Nine times out of ten they’ll be glad you did. Psychiatrists Approve Bill ATLANTA PRN— The Council of the Georgia Psychiatric Association, at its most recent meeting, went on record as approving House Bill No. 1, Georgia’s new mental health legislation, enacted by the 1969 General Assembly. The governing authority of each county can choose between the “medical procedure,” which is outlined in the new law, and the “judicial procedure,” which is essentially the same as in the current law. The Georgia Psychiatric Association Council is of the opinion that the well being of psychiatric patients is best met by the counties following the “medical procedure.” .
