Everyone’s Pheasant
By: Zelma R. Bannister
Does the word "pheasant”
bring to your mind such deli
cacies as "pheasant under
glass” -- food fit solely for
kings? Well, you’ll probably
enjoy this feast of kings your
self during the holiday season
because the turkey is a member
of the pheasant family.
The turkey-type pheasant is
native American. But turkeys—
wild or domesticated--werenot
in yesteryear what they are on
your dining room table today.
Modern turkeys are deep and
broad-breasted, with more
white meat, and 50 percent more
meat as a whole, than their
colonial predecessors.
Now, imagine the rich warm
scent of a steaming hot turkey
spilling its spicy stuffing out
over your best platter—and the
accompanuing bowl of fragrant
dark gravy. Add ot this scene
a sma 11 child, his face half
hidden by a hugh drumstick.
Include the rest of the family,
too, as they munch other parts
of the golden bird.
Who says you aren’t eating
like kings? Everyone’s phea
sant, it’s the perfect holiday
dinner.
GOURMET FARE
If you and your family like
royal eating, at budget prices,
now’s the time to treat every
one to “Chicken a la King.”
Two main ingredients to this
tasty dish—rich and broiler
fryers—are plentiful now, acc
ording to the USDA Consumer
and Marketing Service. So chan
ces are you’ll find them featured
at attractive prices.
You may also substitute tur
key for chicken in most recipes
for "Chicken a la King.” This
is also a good way to disguise
left-over bits of the holiday
bird. Just use your favorite
The only bones

are in the bonus turkey.
There's no better way to prepare those big
holiday meals than with a new Gas range.
And from now through December, with the
purchase of a new Gas range, we ll even pro
vide the main course—a bonus Holiday Turkey.
Gas appliances give you more time to enjoy
the holidays, too. New self-cleaning ovens on
some Caloric and Roper Gas ranges end
hours of scrubbing and scraping. Just turn on
your new self-cleaning Gas oven and relax.
It cleans automatically, then shuts itself off.
A new Whirlpool Gas dryer is another great
Calorlo
“Chicken a la King” recipe.
SNACKS FOR TOTS
Should the preschool child
be allowed snacks? Yes, if the
snacks are considered as apart
of the total daily food intake
and not just any food eaten
in addition to the regular meal.
Sancktime does not mean eat
ing irregularly between meals.
It should be planned for mid
morning and mid-afternoon, so
as to be at least two hours
before mealtime. If snacks
come too near mealtime the
child comes to the table with
a stomach so full of food that he
is not ready for more.
Be sure snacks are varied and
include foods taken from the
“Basic Four Food Groups.”
If a child is allowed to take all
snacks from one food group,
such as crackers or cookies,
he is likely to be less well
nourished than the child whose
snacks as well as regular meals
are varied foods taken from all
four groups in the daily food
guide.
Planned snacks can keep a
child happy. A hungry child is
often an irritable one. Good
snacks can help provide the
daily food needs and help to
develop the habit of selecting
foods which furnish the essen
tial nutrients as well as furnish
energy.
IT’S A FACT!
A woman never knows her
worst fault until she quarrels
with her best friend.
