department today announced to
■Jepartment today announced
dhat services to mothers and
■children in this area are being
dxpanded through nursing well
■child conferences to be held re
fcularly at the health center in
■Cumming. The first conference
■is scheduled for the first Fri
day of each month by appoint

I Aimed primarily at providing
■advice and counsel to mothers
■of children not under the care
Uof private physicians, the well
■child conferences will be con
ducted by public health nurses.
attending the confer
ences will be checked for gr
owth, developmental and nutr
itional adequacy. They will be
■screened for any abnormalities
land referred to physicians for
Icare and treatment where med
ical needs are detected.
“Too often, minor medical
Problems become serious be
cause they aro discovered ear
ly in life," said Dr. H.H. Lan
caster, district health director.
“Hearing and vision defects, in
Particular, may go unnoticed in
'“ e pre-school age child. These
a re things the well child con
ferences can bring out. The
failure of a child to grow and
develop normally for his age, or
peer group can also be signi
ficant, yet can be readily de
termined by an adequate nursing
evaluation," the health director
pointed out. “This is another
facet of the well child confer
ence— to measure growth and
development and to aid parents
In helping their children ac
hieve satisfactory rates of gr
owth."
Dr. Lancaster stressed that
Public health nurses have been
trained to assist mothers with
a variety of child care matters
of a non-medical nature rang
ing from simple feeding pro
blems and sleeping habits to
behavior patters. “The public
health nurse, employing her
training and experience, can be
of great help to parents in pro
tecting the health of their yo
ungsters and in advising them
on child care in general,” the
district director said.
“The well child nursing con
ference program,” he went on,
“is really a front line effort
to provide good preventive care
to children who are not seen
regularly by a physician. Mo
thers of infants and pre-school
age youngsters, in particular,
are urged to enroll their child
ren in the well child confer
ence program if they are not
receiving medical supervi
sion.”
Anyone interested in en
rolling a child or children in
the program may obtain addi
tional Information, including the
time and place of conferences,
by calling the Forsyth county
health office at Cumming be
tween the hours of 8:30 and
4:30, Monday through Friday.
Conference attendance is free
and is available to all Forsyth
county residents.

man of the Forsyt h County

If two-thirds or more of cott

Make the
Great Escape.
Switch to a
flameless electric heat pump
Mmmm. Dogwood weather. Probably the only time
of year everyone agrees on. It’s delicious. But
what about those slushy-cold Februarys? Mosquito
steamy Augusts?
An electric heat pump provides dogwood weather
or whatever temperature you like year ’round.
You simply set the thermostat. Then, the heat pump
will automatically heat or cool your house as needed.
It dehumidifies the air, just enough. Filters out most dust
and pollen, too.
Sweet spring weather can’t be beat. Can’t be depended
on, either. But the heat pump can. Because we can
offer you an economical 10-year service plan which
includes all parts and all labor.
Enjoy the many advantages from this one machine. V e
call it a heat pump. You’ll call it a Great Escape.
