GOD
and
YOU
By Minor Martin
“Do not I hate them, O Lord, that hate thee? and am not I
grieved with those that rise up against thee? I hate them with
perfect hatred: I count them mine enemies.” (Psa. 139: 21-22)
We should not seek nor desire to have peace with the Devil.
Neither should we cultivate friendship with God's enemies except
to the end that we might win them to Him. Actually, God’s
enemies should be our enemies if we are His friends. And
they should be exposed for what they are. Jesus identified Judas
as His betrayer in the presence of His disciples. Could it be
that we, His people, are sometimes guilty of sheltering God’s
enemies simply for the sake of peace?
Peace is wonderful. And we should seek peace as far as
possible without compromising with the Devil. But above all
things, we must seek peace with God. And fellowship with the
unfruitful works of darkness is not conducive to “the peace
that passeth all understanding.”
It is possible for devout rpembers of the Church to disrupt
their fellowship with God by maintaining fellowship with His
enemies. We tolerate troublemakers and busybodies and liars
in the Church; all in the name of peace.
But Jesus did differently. And why Christians are afraid
to be like Him is hard to understand. The truth is, we fear
unpopularity, the very thing which the Bible teaches that all
must share who would work in the kingdom of God.
No one in his right mind would say that Jesus was a trouble
maker, or a divider. Yet, He gave His enemies trouble, and
also did some dividing from time to time. This is not in any
way to suggest that we, who are called by His name, should
trouble our enemies, nor seek to divide. Quite to the contrary,
we are to let the Holy Spirit make us as one for the furtherance
of God’s kingdom on earth. But if and when the Devil works
His way into our midst, He should be exposed and resisted.
Failure to do so only leads to trouble and confusion. And it
may well be that God will allow the innocent to suffer because
he was silent in the face of evil. Of course the innocent may
suffer also for exposing sin. But that will be at the hands
of man, and it is better to suffer persecution than to endure
the wrath of God.
John the Baptist was a fearless messenger with a fearful
message. And had he not denounced sin he might have lived
long on the earth. The same is true of Jesus. When He entered
the Temple at Jerusalem He found the money-changers, and
those who bought and sold in the Temple. But for the sake of
peace, did He leave them alone? Hardly. “When He had made
a scourage of small cords, He drove them all out of the Temple,
and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers’
money, and overthrew the tables; and said unto them... Make
not my Father’s house an house of merchandise.” (Jno. 2:15-16)
So you see, Jesus was not silent in the face of evil merely
for the sake of popularity, nor for any other reason.
The Bible teaches that as the last days approach, God’s
enemies shall increase both within and without the Church.
And the very elect shall be deceived, if possible. But one by
one God shall deal with His enemies until that day when all
shall be judged. And I say if we just must fight and hate, let's
join with Jesus in fighting and hating the Devil. He’s big and
strong and is deceiving more people and causing more trouble
today than ever before in history. And there’s a reason for
this. Read what the Bible has to say: “Woe to the inhabiters
of the earth and of the sea! for the Devil is come down unto you,
having great wrath, because He knoweth that He hath but a short
time.” (Rev. 12:12) And even as His time is short, so is ours.
For we are here today and gone tomorrow. What about tomorrow?

Mr. W.R. Bannister, now re
tired was for forty years clerk
of the Concord Baptist Church.
When asked what the Church had
meant to him, he had this to
say:
“Well, it’s just meant reli
gious life to me. It’s about the
only place I ever went to Ch
urch. It’s an old landmark, I
gues s about the oldest Church
in this part of the country.
Over the years it’s meant alot
to me”.
“Churches are getting off
the old path now,” he went on.
‘‘They’re modern. It hurts me.

Pausing as if to look back over
the years, Mr. Bannister was
silent for a moment. Then con
tinuing, he said: “The Lord will
carry us through . . .if we’ll
let Him.”
Turning again to the subject
of the Church, he concluded:
“The Church is not a social
institution. The real mission of
the Church is to win souls,
and we’re not doing it. When
it gets down to two or three
little children a year, we’re
hurting.”
