STRICTLY FOR
WOMEN

Budget Savers
Are you in a budget squeeze?
Why not consider some of these
holiday budgetsavers? By the
way, they are good tips for the
entire year.
Budget-best chicken is in the
bag. If you have a large family
or a freezer, it pays to buy
broiler-fryers packed two, th
ree or more in a plastic bag.
The birds are cleaned and ready
to roast, cut up or fry. You
can turn them into all kinds
of family main dishes, salad
treats and sandwiches for the
holidays.
On your shopping list, jot
down “alternates” in case one
food is a better buy than another.
A special on canned pears may
mean savings over the fresh
ones.
Stretch the dollars you spend
at the dairy case. Buy choco
late milk for a treat. Buy milk
in half-gallon or gallon con
tainers if your family uses a
lot of milk. Why not buy large
eggs for breakfast and small
ones for use in cooking.
No one ever seems to tire
of potatoes. What would we do
without this penny-wise vege
table? While it keeps well, buy
only as many at one time as
you can store properly. This
means give them air in a cool
dry spot away from direct light.
YOUR CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
Your Chamber of Commerce is a voluntary organ
ization composed of business and professional men
and women and other citizens who believe that
through united action the progress of its com
munity can be materially enhanced and that living
conditions can be continuously improved.
The Chamber of Commerce movement in the United
States predates the Constitution. The value of
such organizations has long been universally recog
nized and every significant city or community with
in the United States now has an active Chamber
of Commerce.
The Chamber of Commerce movement has been
responsible for much of our state’s progress during
the last half century.
The Chamber of Commerce of the United States
is chartered by the Congress and is recognized as
the spokesman for business at the national level.
■>
The members of your Chamber of Commerce, as
sisted and coordinated by the officers and staff,
continually analyze the important elements relating
to community progress. Depending upon the re
quirements of the individual community, some
projects are continuous, others are established for
the purpose of meeting specific short term goals.
Programs are constantly revised to keep abreast of
changing requirements.
Although the generally accepted primary purpose
of a Chamber of Commerce is to exploit to the max
imum the economic potential of a community, it
must also be active in all aspects of community
life - the living conditions, educational, recreation
al, spiritual activities and cultural development
since all of these have a vital effect upon eco
nomic progress.
The activities of your Chamber of Commerce are
managed and directed by the elected officers with
the assistance of the permanent staff. Commit
tees, composed of interested and qualified mem
bers, are appointed and maintained to carry on
the many and diversified functions of the Cham
ber’s community development program. These
committees are responsible to the President and
Directors for the accomplishment of stated objec
tives.
Support of your Chamber of Commerce is highly
important to all business and professional people
and other citizens because it pays real dividends
in the form of more business, better living condi
tions and a more attractive and desirable com
munity. Since the important service rendered by
the Chamber of Commerce must be adequately
financed in order to be effective, your support is
highly important as most of the funds available
are from membership dues investment.
REMEMBER, it really costs nothing to be a mem
ber of your Chamber of Commerce! Actually, it
pays! To support your Chamber of Commerce by
being an active member means a better and more
prosperous community-a dividend which offsets
the investment many fold! Too, your support may
bring you and your ideas public recognition.
Day-old baked foods, such as

You can get more food for

PINK CRANBERRIES
Cranberry sauce is practic
ally a must during the holidays.
If you're making your own fav
orite recipe for cranberry re
cipe for cranberry sauce, here
are some tips.
Fresh cranberries differ
considerably is size and color.
For the best quality, look for
plump, firm berries with a good
bright color.
Duller varieties should at
least have some red color. Soft,
spongy or leaky berries should
be sorted out before cooking
because they may produce an
off-flavor.

Jaycees Get $256.00 For
Empty Stocking Fund
Christmas is getting brightei
daily for many Forsyth County
children as Jaycees continue
to add to their Empty Stocking
Fund.
A roadblock staged by a hand
ful of Jaycees Sunday netted
some $256.00. In addition, ch
urches, businesses, civic
organizations and many indivi
duals have contributed signifi
gantly.
Meanwhile, the list of reci
pients grows steadily. Calls
are being taken of concerned fa
mily and friends whose conver
sation usually begins ....
“I know this family of child
ren who don’t have much any
time and won’t get anything for
Christmas unless the Jaycees
can bring them something.”
Jack Tribble, president of
Jaycees, says some of the let
ters of request ne nas rece
ived will bring tears to one’s
eyes.
Ledford Pruitt, a spokesman
for the organization, maintains
that this should be the biggest
year in the history of the Em
pty Stocking Fund. Almost 100
names are already on the roll
for receiving toys and clothes
donated with more expected to
be added. The budget is getting
tight.
A word of thanks is conveyed
to all who have given. The final
date for giving has been est
ablished as December 22. Lo

Chambers of Commerce are operated as independ
ent, nonprofit organizations for the overall better
ment of the communities which they serve. They
are actually run by the membership through an
elected board of directors. Elections are normally
held annually at which time retiring board members
are replaced by newly elected directors. It is a
general practice to replace only a portion of these
individuals each year in order to provide for con
tinuity of action. A president, one or more vice
presidents, a treasurer and other officers are
elected annually after the newly constituted Board
of Directors has been determined.
The Board of Directors and members serving on the
many committees do sc without pay. A relatively
small permanent staff, including a chief executive,
are the only salaried persons in the average cham
ber.
Everyone benefits as a result of the active Cham
ber of Commerce program - the housewife, the
merchant, the contractor, the farmer, the skilled
worker, the professional man, all business firms,
visitors and even retired residents.
Members of your Chamber of Commerce benefit
through their own efforts by the successful solution
of the many problems undertaken. It is well rec
ognized that by coordinated group action more
benefits will result in which all share.
By bolstering the economy, the potential of all
business and professional activities is increased,
more jobs are created and the tax base is broad
ened through property development. Better mu
nicipal services can thus be provided at a lower
tax rate than would otherwise be possible. All
property values in an ever progressing community
are improved, thus building up the worth of indi
vidual estates. New stores, shops and other services
make available to the housewife and homemaker
more conveniently located and diversified shopping
facilities with competitive prices and greater selec
ions.
As in the case of a prospering family, which makes
possible a better home, new household furnishings
and other desirable things, a prosperous city can
have better stores, libraries, schools, new streets,
parks and more recreational'and cultural facilities.

All that a dried out evergr

spark to reduce it to charred
wood in a matter of seconds.
Therefore, discard the tree
when the needles become bri

Fire tests, conducted on spr
uce, fir, cedar and pine trees
six to seven feet tall, demon
strated that such trees require
an average of only 36 seconds
to burn. During this period,
flames up to 23 feet in ehight
are generated. With the intense
heat generated and the large
amount of flaming, a fire in

time of year to insure a hap
