Conservation
' |Each year about a million
3 ore Americans get interested
hunting and fishing. One in
fiye goes hunting. Fishing is
ejen more popular with men,
and has strong appeal to women
as well as the younger set.
More than one-third of Amer
icans families are interested
iii fishing.
I Too seldom do those who hunt
and fish consider the relation
ship between conservation pr
actices carried out on farms
and ample fish and wildlife,
yjany soil, water and woodland
conservation practices, estab
lished for their soil and water
conservation benefits, contri
bute, to outdoor recreational
benefits too.
[Farmers are our wildlife
custodians. Privately-owned
fafrm and timber lands provide
8p percent of the wildlife av
ailable for hunting, as well as
much good fishing. Upland game
birds, resident game animals,
fiish and even migratory worter
fowl, are part of the harvest
oi farms.
1 However, with more and more
people turning to hunting and fi
shing, we run a chance of over
loading the hunting and fishing
aieas of farms and woodlands.
That is why many sportsmen
afre directly interested in soil,
water timber and wildlife con
servation measures on private
lind.
•Conservation practices on
private land greatly increase
and improve food, shelter and
water for wildlife on the farm.
Also, adequate conservation on
farmland helps keep silt out
of adjacent lakes and streams,
and improve them for fishing.
The result is improved hunt

Dear Mr. Martin:
Ever since I can remember
the rule for buying on time has
been: make your down payment
as large as you can. That way
you pay finance charges on a
smaller amount and save mon
ey. Recently I read that so
called smart borrowers are
making small down payments
and financing as much as they
can. What’s so smart about
that? J.M.M.
Supporters of the small down
payment philosophy are betting
on continued inflation, and if
tey’re right, they’re also sm
art borrowers. The theory is
this: inflation means the value
of the dollar is declining--that
is, it will buy less tomorrow
than it can buy today. So it
is smart to pay as little as
you can with today’s dollar and
defer payment until tomorrow
when you dollar will be worth

ional opportunities.
Since 1936 USDA’s Agricul
tural Conservation Program
has been assisting farmers and
ranchers establish needed con
servation practices. The pro
gram has produced many thou
sands of acres of improved
wildlife hatitat. About 2 mil
lion farm ponds have been con
structed. Through the years wi
ldlife benefits of these conser
vation practices have been con
sidered as “additional benefit.”
A change of policy in 1962
has helped to expand recrea
tional benefits from ACP. Un
til that time ACP had not shared
costs of any project that had
recreation or wildlife benefits
as the primary purpose. Now,
the use of trees and shrubs that
benefit wildlife and the use of
ponds for sport fishing are en
couraged.
Other farm programs have
helped to enhance wildlife too.
For instance, in 1968, 32.4 mi
llion acres were diverted from
feed grain production—under
the feed grain program—to con
servation uses. Over 9 million
acres were in conservation co
ver under the old conservation
reserve. (1969 figures: 41.3 mi
llion acres signed up for di
version from feed grain to con
serving uses, and 3.3 million
acres remaining in the conser
vation reserve.)

measures carried out by farm

less. It’s true, of course; you
will be committed to larger
payments tomorrow and thus a
larger Interest cost. But if
prices continue to rise (they
went up almost 6 per cent in
the last year), you will still
be saving money be paying in
inflated dollars tomorrow for a
purchase you made today.
But keep in mind there is the
other side of this coin. Shoul
we enter a deflationary period—
or even an extended period of
economic stability—the bene
fits of low down payments will
vanish. And there is every poss
ibility tha inflation wil 1 be
stopped. At least every tool
of government is being applied
to the task of stemming infla
tion.
Thus, betting on continued in
flation is just that-a gamble.
Since I have no crystal ball
and cannot predict the direc
tion in which the cost of living
will go in the months and years
ahead, I’m compelled to stick
with the advice Pve always
given: make your down pay
ment as large as you com
fortably can and keep your fu
ture credit obligations within
your reach.
And if you want to do any
gambling, stick to the horses.
They aremore predictable than
the economy.

ASTHMA:
All Season
Disease
Asthma is truly a “disease
for all seasons.” Unlike most
disorders associated with all
ergies, Asthma is not confined
to one specific time of the year
not to one particular cause or
group of causes.
What is Asthma? What causes
Asthma? What is an Asthma
attack? How do you dure
Asthma? These are just a few
of the questions that are ra
ised by those who are or think
that they may be victims of the
disease.
Chances are you either have
or are related to an asthma
victim. In a recent year one
out of ten people in the United
States suffered from some form
of allergic disease. Of this nu
mber, a substantial number had
asthma.
Asthma is a breathing dif
ficulty due to obstruction of the
bronchioles, the smaller air pa
ssages that carry air from the
windpipe into the lungs. The
passages are narrowed by
spasm of their muscles, sw
elling of the mucous membrane
that is their lining and incr
eased amounts of mucus or
phlegm.
A hayride in winter may cuase
Asthma. Or a white rabbit. Or
a French omelet. Or polluted
air. People who have inherited
a tendency to allergies may be
especially susceptible. Asthma
is a result of irritation due to
an allergic reaction to various
substances certain pllens,
dust, animal hairs, feathers and
so on— or due to chemical or
mechanical irritants such as
smoke air pollutants and others.
An asthma victim may have a
mild continuous form or may
suffer sudden, severe attacks.
A person with a severe attack
feels as if he is choking. He
cannot get enough air and can
not get it out afterward. Us
ually he coughs a great deal and
spits of a white mucous.
Despite these attacks, asthma
is rarely fatal. An attack may
leave some soreness in the
chest, but X-rays usually do not
reveal any damage to the lungs
in the early stages. Children
with asthma occasionally re

Volunteer To Be
A Forsyth County
Fire Fighter!
FAIRIY SPOKEN ... By Sara Flint
The Forsyth County Fire De
partment really needs vol
unteers in a very bad way. To
volunteer, just call Sheriff Do
nald Pirkle at 887-2375. He says
volunteers can live in Cumming
or in the county and must be
at least sixteen years of age.
Come on, how about it? Just
imagine what fun it would be to
become a Forsyth County Vo
lunteer Firefighter. When the
alarm goes off, wherever you
are, you just drop everything
(employers usually go along
with this) and head out. It could
be anything from a chicken house
to a mansion. Who knows what
waits at the end of the line.
The time involved is practically
nothing when compared with how
muc h you spend doing other
things.
Actually, the sheriff and de
puties are the only volunteer
firemen with the county at pre
their teens. Such recoveries
sometimes occur in adults, too.
During a severe attack of as
thma, doctors may give patients
injections ot relieve distress.
More recently, corticosteriods
have helped to end long-lasting
attacks. Today, doctors can br
ing quick relief to ashtma vic
times and may be able to pre
vent further attacks.
In asthma caused by a rea
ction to a specific substance,
doctor and patient must beging
a search for the factor tha
has caused the attack. The pa
tient should keep careful re
cords of his responses to foods,
animals, houses, climates. Fin
ding the cause is a process of
detective work and requires
complete cooperation from the
patient. It is seldom a single
substance, usually sveral are
involved.
The best method of treatment
used so far is a series of

Putting Car in Good Condition
Are you thinking about sell
ing your car yourself rather
than trading? There are a few
things you can do to help Old
Faithful sell quicker and for a
better price.
Your prospective customeis
will be much more aware of
certain idiosyncrasies which
you have learned to live with
but which might not cost much
to fix. Worn carpeting, for ex

attractive contour floor mats
for a few dollars.
One thumping tire might be
replaced with your good spare.
This creates a much better
driving impression and ought
to be done anyway.

Maybe you have become ac

slightly grabbing brakes. Don’t
try to sell your car in this con

a ditch. Instead, invest a few

is right when you turn over
the keys.

A clean, new sticker on the

creased confidence in the car
and the person selling it. The
cost is peanuts.
This is not to say you should
go overboard in fixing up to
sell. Some people have learned,
to their dismay, that a cheap
dent repair or inadequate
paint job can actually work
against them.
Shabby paint is much easier
on the eye than a poor paint
job which often makes a pros

accident repair that he thinks
you are trying to cover up.

Use discretion and you will
see good returns on your pre
sale investment. Think how
you would feel about it if you
were buying the car. Does it
look as if somebody cares? Is
the interior clean? You can
take care of this yourself with
special upholstery cleaners
available at your auto supply
store And a professional vac
uuming at your service station
will help matters considerably.
With everything up to snuff,
you ought to be able to sell the
car much more quickly than if
you had not invested a little
money and some of your own
time in it.
In fact, you might decide to
keep it.
