Income Tax
This column of questions and
answers on federal tax matters
is provided by the local office
of the U.S. Internal Revenue
Service and is published as a
public service to taxpayers.
The column answers questions
most frequently asked by tax
payers.
Q. Can I take a business de
duction for the bottles of whis
key I buy as Christmas gifts
for my customers?
A. Yes, business gifts are a
deductible expense as long as
they do not exceed $25, to any
one customer during the year.
If gifts total more than $25,
only $25 may be deducted. A
gift to a customer’s wife or
child must generally be inclu
ded with any gift to the cus
tomer himself in figuring the
$25 limit.
Note that gifts which cost
$4 or less are not subject to
this limit if your name is cl
early and permanently printed
on the item and is one of a nu
mber of identical items dis
tributed by you. This would
cover calendars, pens and si
milar items.
Q. I’ve taken a part-time se
cond job. What can I do to stop
having Social Security taxes
taken out o f my pay on both
jobs?
A. Each employer is requ
ired to withhold Social Secur
ity taxes on the first $7,800
of wages paid employees in
1969. However, if more than the
maximum of $374.40 is withheld
for Social Security because you
had two jobs, the excess can
be claimed as a credit on your
1969 income tax return.
Procedures for claiming this
credit are explained in the ins
tructions you will receive with
your tax forms.
Q. Can I deduct my veter
inary fees when I figure out my
farm income on Schedule F, Fo
rm 1040?
A. Yes, veterinary fees as
well as medicine for farm live
stock are deductible when you
report farm income and ex
penses.
Veterinary care for personal
pets is not deductible.
Q. What types of taxes are
involved when IRS closes down
a business for failure to pay
Federal taxes?
A. Any type of tax may be
involved; however, these cases
usually involve employers who
fail to turn over to the Go
vernment the money they have
withheld from their employees’
wages for income and Social
Security taxes.
Drastic steps such as clos
ing a business or levying on
wages are only taken as a Ist
wages are only taken as a
last resort after the taxpayer
has repeatedly failed to make
satisfactory arrangements to
pay the tax. Congress has au
throized IRS to take certain
specific actions in such cases
in fairness to the other tax
payers who do pay in full and on
time,
Q. I won't oe working anymore
this year so why can’t I file
my tax return now? I could use

the money I’m expecting to get
back?
A. Existing regulations pro
vide for the filing of an in
come tax return after the end
of the tax year, which, with rare
exceptions, is the calendar year
for employees. Even though you
may not work or receive income
during the rest of the year,
a tax return is required to be
filed on the basis of a full
tax year. To avoid delays when
you file for your refund, make
sure you have a Form W-2
statement of wages paid and
taxes withheld attached to your
return. Your employer should
have given you your W-2
within 30 days after leaving
employment.

¥ Let us listen in reverent wonder to the story of the first
J Christmas in Bethlehem long ago, when humble shepherds
and mighty kings knelt together to witness the miracle of His Birth in the
manger ... and choirs of angels sang in the heavens, heralding a new
