Birth Defects -- A Bitter Fact
“What can I do for my baby?"
asks the desperate mother of a
child with a birth defect. In toe
many instances, she asks one
person or agency after another
and gets only partial answers.
When a baby is born with a
birth defect, much more can be
done than mosy people realize.
It is often possible to control
a congenital disease, repair
a handicapping condition or in
some other way restore the
child to health and a useful life.
There are two medical faci
lities in Georgia especially set
up to deal with birth defects
problems: the March of Dimes
Birth Defects Special Treat
ment Center at Grady Memor
ial Hospital in Atlanta, oper
ated by Emory University Sc
hool of Medicine, and another in
Augusta, operated by the Un
iversity of Georgia Medical Sc
hool. There are 109 other cen
ters across the nation, all fin
anced by the march of Dimes an
benefiting from the annual Jan
uary fund drive.
Since birth defects are ex
tremely complicated medical
problems, a “team” approach
is used at the centers where
specialists from many fields
are brought together to con
sult and deal with all the pro
blems of a chiid born with de
fects. The “team” approach el
iminates the confusion and fr
ustration that come when a
family must see each special
ist in a spearate place. The sk
ills of a pediatrician, neurolo
gist, orthopedist, physical ther
apist, and other experts may be
focused on the patient in a
single visit.
Patients are referred to the
Birth Defects Centers by pri
vate physicians or public health
doctors for diagnosis, possi
ble treatment, referral toother
medical sources, or advice on
how the problems can best be
handled at home.

STRICTLY FOR
WOMEN

WARM IDEA
Looking for a good warm meal
to serve your family on these
cold January and February
days? Many Forsyth County
homemakers know how to use
the old bean for these meals.
Here is a tasty tip. Serve
«your family Chili Con Came,
'it’s a cold weather treat.
Dry beans, particularly pea
and pinto beans, are in good
supply now, so chances are
they’ll be featured at attrac
tive prices.
Chili Con Carne
2 tablespoons bacon drippings
1/3 cup chopped onion
1 clove garlic, sliced
1/2 pound ground beef
2 1/2 cups cooked dry kidney
or pinto beans
1/3 cup minced green pepper
:2 to 2 1/2 cups cooked or
canned tomatoes
1 bay leaf, crushed
2 teaspoons sugar
2 to 4 teaspoons chili powder
salt and pepper
Brown onion and garlic in
drippings. Add meat and cook
slowly for a few minutes, sti
rring occasionally.
Add remaining ingredients,
season and simmer until meat
is tender and flavors are ble
nded—about 30 minutes.
CLOTHING SPEAKS
Clothing communicates.
That’s right. It has a message
|Almshouse
Seeks Clothes
[
IFor Young
The ladies who operate the
Alms House would like to thank
the people of Forsyth County
who gave clothing to the less
fortunate this past year. They
are in real need of children's
clothes and will be open Jan.
8 from 9 until 12 o’clock for
the acception of clothes. So,
please find it in your heart to
cloth the little children so they
will be warm this winter.
They will be open to the pub
lic Jan. 15 to distribute the
clothes for the needy.
to tell the people with whom we
come in contact each day.
Have you ever thought about
how you analyze new people?
How many things do you really
decide about them before they
speak? When you look at a per- i
son, you often decide their age, j
sex, social and economic sta
tus and occupation. You might
even decide if they are aggr
essive or an introvert.
After meeting th e person
some of these first impress
ions from their clothes may be
changed, nevertheless they
were formed in the beginning.
The right clothing can make
you become socially accepted i
or it can be the tool for getting
a job. The right clothes also
affect us psychologically. If
your clothes seem right for the
occasion, you act as if you feel
at ease. The opposite is true
when you feel you aren’t dressed
as you should be.
What do your clothes tell ot
hers? You can make them say
what you want to say. Think of
yourself as an individual and
the role or roles you play. Then,
plan your clothing to suit your
individuality and project the
proper image for each occasion.
IT’S A FACT!!
Nobody loses anything by be
ing polite. But there are a lot
of people who seem afraid to
take the risk.
