CENSUS MICROFILMING Completed consus question
naires are photographed at rate of two per second onto
microfilm.
The microfilming is facili
tated by an automatic page
turner developed in the
Census Bureau’s Engineering
Development Laboratory
under the direction of
Anthony A. Berlinsky. As
each questionnaire is fed to
one of 40 available microfilm
cameras, an automatic turner
flips pages, and after sensing
when the last page is reached
ejects it and begins processing
another. No comparable
device exists.
The microfilm is fed to
FOSDIC (Film Optical
Sensing Device for /nput to
Computers) which scans each
microfilm frame with a beam
of light and converts the dots
into magnetic code on
computer tape. Six FOSDICs
will operate around the clock
for four months to transfer
50,000 rolls of microfilm
onto 6500 reels of computer
tape at the rate of 70,000
items of information per
minute. In 1790 only about
six items could be handled
each minute.)
The computers, capable of
processing 700,000 items of
information each minute,
output directly to microfilm
(COM) at speeds up to
90,000 characters per second
about 30 times faster than
data can be recorded by
impact printers, the usual
output recording devices
which resemble high-speed
typewriters.
To illustrate the data
processing speedup since
1790, the Census Bureau
compared clerks with pencils
tabulating census data with
the modern' computer, and
found that in terms of units
of work, the modern com
puter performs the work of
14.000 clerks.

electronic data processing,
and its use is growing at a
fantastic rate,” says Adams.
He reports that a recent
survey of its members by the
National Microfilm Assn,
indicates that by the end of
1970 there will be at least
five times as many COM units
in operation as there were at
the beginning of 1969.
Industry spokesmen predict
as many as 12,000 COM
recorders will be in use within
five years.

Vice President Aprew
Agnew Will
Visit Georgia
. Atlanta (PRN)— State
Republican Chairman Wiley
Wasden, Jr., announced today
plans for a fund-raising dinner
and reception featuring Vice
President Spiro Agnew on
Saturday, February 21, 1970.
Chairman Wasden said that
the Republican Party of
Georgia was honored to be
able to have the Vice President
help kick off campaign events
for 1970.

Our hard hats are soft-hearted.
Behind electric power beats the heart of the
Georgia Power Company ... its people. J. C.
Adams, a recently retired lineman, is one of
them. A champion blood donor, he’s given 112
pints of life-sustaining blood to the Red Cross.
And that’s only part of the some 32,500 pints
our donors have given in the past 19 years.
Our company’s lifeline doesn’t stop there. It
goes on to other service organizations: Easter
Seal, United Appeal. Community Chest. Salvation
Army Christmas dolls. And youth programs such
as 4-H, FHA, FFA, Junior Achievement. Girl
and Boy Scouts, Youth Conference on the Atom
music and journalism scholarships.
The generators in our powerhouses supply
electricity. But the real dynamos, like Mr. Adams,
are vitally involved in life.

Wasden said it is
anticipated that the event will
be held in Atlanta and the
dinner committee members
will be announced at a later
date.
Wasden said that Spiro
Agnew has emerged as one of
the greatest Vice Presidents in
history and as a friend of the
“great silent majority.” He
said the Spiro Agnew is now a
hero to many Americans
because they appreciate a
leader who “tells it like it is.”
Wasden also remarked that
the Administration accepts
Georgia and all other Southern
states as full-fledged members
of the team and that the
acceptance by Vice President
Agnew of the invitation by
Georgia Republicans is a good
example of the relationship
between the White House and
all Georgians.
Dinner tickets are SIOO per
person for the dinner and
reception. Wasden anticipates
that over 1000 people will
attend the event.
County Republican
organizations will participate
in the financial proceeds from
the event. Wasden said this
