Postmasters are among the few Americans who proudly fly
the Flag of our country each day. This is a high privilege.
In these turbulent times, perhaps more than ever before, we
may need to remind ourselves and others of the grandeur of
Old Glory.
The flag of a nation is but the symbol of that nation’s insti
tutions, epitomizing its morals its purpose, its traditions, its
spirit, its people and its government.
The Stars and Stripes represent the greatness of America,
and the greatness of America is determined; not by the re
sources hidden in her soil; nor by its pomp, power or wealth,
but by the devotion of its people to the fundamental principles
of Liberty, Justice and Democracy.
No greater curse could befall us as a people nor one that
would more speedily accomplish our destruction as a nation
than for the Flag of our country to become the flag of a godless
people.
Like you, I am disturbed and I am angered by conditions
which now prevail in many parts of our country. There is a
sickness in this land we love. Thank God it is presently confined
to only a small segment of our society but there is real danger
in the complacency and the apathy of the masses.
Too many of us wring our hands in despair and do little else.
Too many of us shrink from becoming involved.
Too many of us who are well have surrendered to those
who are sick.
Through A
Glass Darkly
(1 Cor. 13:12)
By Robert M. Alston
Pastor, Cumming United
Methodist Church
I am a young teacher in the school system here, and I’m
terribly perturbed over the apparent disregard for authority
in the classroom. I have to act like a militant to obtain some
semblance of control. Frankly, I’m thinking of leaving Forsyth
although I don’t want to.
. It appears that you are having a rough time of it right now.
You are having what I call, “the atomic explosion” experience.
This is where the threads which hold the seams to life together
are suddenly ripped to shreads. I am hardly qualified to be
offering advice in the area of your concern, since it deals
with a vocation of which I have received no training. However,
I would appreciate indluging a little with you into some of the
more basic points to our conversation - particularly, your
personal relationship to your job.
FACE REALITY . . .It is seldom pleasant to face what is!
about life; therefore, most of us tend to live in a realm that is
not! In other words, we attempt to avoid Reality wherever
possible. In you r situation, Reality has smacked you over the
head, and what you see is not pleasant.
Your classroom discipline problem appears pathetic.
Apparently, there is little interest on the part of the students
to grow intellectually, (Environment is the honest factor in
this of which I’m certain). That’s your reality! Thus, you are
faced with the decision: Do you accept the lack of intellectual
stimulation on their parts, and on an extremely simplistic
plain, struggle every day of the year to create stimulation
in an all but impossible environment? In other words, can you,
and is it worth your while, to care for students who now reject
your attitude of concern, in hopes of one day breaking through
to them?
A LIGHT UNTO THE DARK . . . Are you willing to hold
high the lamp of Education unto the dark, dark recessed areas
of need? Is there strength sufficient to withstand the flickering
of that light, as it all but goes out? Of course, if we are to
continue to exist as a people, someone must keep the Goals -
what can be - before us. For some to know what can be in life,
this is our only hope! Despair is being aware of a problem,
but not knowing what can be done about it. How many of us are
aware of the inadequacies of our lives, but are not cognizant
of the means to make our lives different? Hopelessness is not
even having sufficient knowledge to know we have a problem.
Ignorance is not bliss, as some believe. Ignorance is a living
death, and death is a state of nothingness! Can you give yourself
in the effort to lead others from nothingness, beyond hopelessness
and despair, to knowledge and hope? You know what CAN BE
for these children. It would not be ridiculous to say that, for
these children, you hold in you hands the hope of their lives,
if they ever have something of legitimate value, it will be
because you decided to stick with them.
KNOWLEDGE IS CONDITIONAL . . . Something seldom told
me, but learned simply by existing, is that once we receive
even a new insight, we are from that moment committed to act
on it responsibly '. There can be no receipt of knowledge in
a vacuum. Each tidbit comes to us with conditions attached to it.
Strangely enough, what we learn is “public property” in the
sense we are brothers to mankind. This means we are obligated
to our brothers to lead them toward the moment of sharing our
insight.
The most difficult aspect to consider is that others might
not be prepared to accept this new tidbit or insight we possess!
Nevertheless, we are not then freed from the contract of
knowledge. It merely postpones the time of releasing it. In
the meanwhile, ourjo
the meanwhile, our job goes on. We share wbat can be received
in this moment.
THE SOURCE OF KNOWLEDGE ... It might be good to
reflect for a moment on the Source of Knowledge. Even the most
brillant among us stand in abject poverty before the Souce of
Knowledge. We stand there pitilessly absence of Truth. Yet,
after millions of years, the Source of Knowledge persists in
taking us at the point where we are ... the beginning. Our
new insights are but the gradual breaking in of God upon us.
God has sacrificed His integrity - His completeness; His
unity - so that He might lead us to the point He knows we
should, and can be. We certainly cannot be God pretenders,
but can we attempt any less than what He has done for us?

We received a nice letter this week from attorney Inslee
Johnson of Atlanta concerning a new city Hall for Cumming.
The letter, published elsewhere on this page, is indicative
of the comment we have heard concerning the possible repla
cement of the Cumming City Hall.
The town of Dawsonville was without natural gas Wednesday
night. The temperature fell to about ten degrees and we’ll
bet some folks got mighty chilly. The natural gas service
in this area is very dependable, but those rare instances of
failure seem to be in the coldest temperatures.
A note that Georgia driver’s licenses expire on the holder’s
birthday. I almost let my license expire recently, but remem
bered in the nick of time. If your license expires, you are
forced to take a test.
