Unicoi Station
The U. S. Department of Co
mmerce has approved a North
Georgia Mountains Authority
request for a change order
totaling over $91,700 for the
$1.7-million construction pro
ject now underway at Unicoi
National Outdoor Recreation
Experiment Station near Helen.
Mountains Authority officials
say that this change order will
restore several features which
had been originally planned for
the project, but which were
omitted in the April call for
bids.
Features covered by the ch
ange order include additions to
facilities in the group camp
beach and swimming area; addi
tional paving and lighting for
trails in the campsites, camp
site activity area and cottage
area; and grassing and plant
ing in all areas to restore
construction damage and pro
vide improved erosion control.
Officials noted that the light
ing of trails made possible by
the change order will provide
added safety and security for
the users; and that the revised
or added paving and planting
work will reduce long - term
maintenance costs.
Education
Funds
The U.S. Senate has amended
the 1972 appropriations act for
fiscal 1972 to restore Title I
ESEA funding to the same level
as 1971. This means that over
$3.7 million will be restored in
appropriation for Georgia Title
I programs, and that our 1972
appropriation will be at least
$39,947,788 which is equal to
the 1971 appropriation.
Georgia was one of 15 states
whose 1972 federal grants for
compensatory education has
been reduced. The major por
tion of Title I funds in Geor
gia is used for remedial read
ing programs, kindergarten and
special summer programs.
Local systems are respon
sible for the development of
programs and how Title I funds
will be expended and manypro
grams would suffer severe set
backs if these funds were not
restored.
The Senate amendment to re
store appropriations to the ’7l
level has been approved by the
House and is now in the Senate
for reconciliation before going
to the President for signing.
Advance
your career.
