MEDICINE SHOW
by Lamar Orr
If a friend helps us on with a coat, we smile and say “Thank You.” If we drop something and
someone picks it up for us, we practically burst with gratitude.
Strange?
Strange when we get into business there are so few “Thank You’s.”
It’s our pleasure to say “Thank You to those of you who have made Lanierland Drugs your
center for prescriptions and drug needs.
A phone number that every parent of small children should have readily available is that of the i
nearest Poison Control Center. These centers are prepared to give you fast information regard
ing accidental poisoning 24 hours a day. Should your child swallow medicine or other chemical,
simply call the nearest center. Be prepared to give the name of the drug of chemical and the ap
proximate amount taken if possible. The center can then tell you what emergency measures to
take and whether or not a trip to the emergency room of a hospital is necessary.
The nearest Poison Control Center is located at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. Their nu
mber is 1-659-1212. Write it down. The price of a long-distance phone call might someday save
your chOd’s life or give you peace of mind.
Another good number to remember is that of Lanierland Drugs - 887-7771 days, 887-5575 ni
ghts!

Golden Gloves
To Be Telecast
For the first time, WSB Te
levision, with the cooperation
of the Lakewood Jaycees, will
give viewers the opportunity
of seeing some of the best
amateur boxers in the state
on “Georgia - AAU Golden
Gloves Preview" Saturday,
December 18 at 3:30 p.m.
The bouts will be telecast
live and in color from ringside.
Ringside in this' case means
a special boxing ring const
ructed for this telecast and
set up in one of the studios
at White Columns.
Golden Gloves competitors
from all over Georgia will be
participating in the bouts. All
rules and regulations for Golden
Gloves competition will be in
effect. Each bout will consist of
three two-minute rounds. Most
of the boys seen on the WSB
TV special will be competing
next month in the Golden Gloves
State Championships which will
be held at the Lakewood Fair
grounds. Over two hundred
boxers from over twenty boxing
clubs throughout Georgia are
expected to participate in the
State Championships.
The blow-by-blow action will
be described by WSB Television
Sports Director Carl Sell. He
will be assisted by Steve Th
riekield of the Lakewood
Jaycees. The program is being
produced and directed by WSB
Television’s Roger Marx.
Doodletown
Pipers On WSB
Television
WSB Television will present a
Christmas variety special fea
turing the Doodletown Pipers
on Sunday, December 19 at 5:00
p.m. The program is entitled
“Christmas Party.”
The hour-long special opens
in an empty theater with a
bare stage, and an integral part
of the production is the Pipers’
creation of an authentic ski
lodge, a perfect Christmas
setting. The group’s mentors,
producer-choreographer Ward
Ellis and musical director
George Wilkins, have managed
to incorporate a dozen tunes into
the fast-moving special’s for
mat without making it seem
like an hour-long Christmas
carol. Wilkins’ musical selec
tions for the group range from
traditional children’s favorites
like “Rudolph the Red-Nosed
Reindeer" to tender ballads
like “Scarlet Ribbons," pulsat
ing gospel in “He’s Got The
Whole World In His Hands,"
and moving choral numbers like
“Some Children See Him.”
Part of the magic that’s evi
dent in this special is in the
way the Pipers work with the
children who start out as mem
bers of the audience but be
come indispensable members
of the cast after they have
been invited to come up on
stage and join the fun. There’s
great rapport between the Pi
pers and the kids, occasioned
perhaps by the lack of a real
generation gap. The Pipers play
very well to the kids, and so
they should because when it
comes right down to it, children
are what Christmas is all about.
