Christmas Seals
Long range benefits of re

emphasized in a recent report
of the National Tuberculosis

Last year, more than
$1,518,000 in grants of $7,000

Although undramatic, the in
vestigations supported by these
limited funds hold a potential
contribution to medical know
ledge that defies calculation.
Citing five medical experts
recently selected by the Na

to establish specialized Centers

Senior Citizens Given Special Treat
3Y: JOHN REYNOLDS
Singing of favorite hymns and carols, good fellowship and jollity reigned supreme at the Senior
Citizens Party, sponsored by volunteer workers and Mr. Ronald McClure, Director of Family
and Childrens Services in Forsyth County. The special event honored members of the elderly
contingent within the county and gave expression in a tangible manner for the older people’s worth
as contributors to the well-being of our county and its historical past.
There were seventy-five people present at the 2 o’clock festival of food and fun. Singing of
Christmas Carols, giving of gifts andhealthy packages of fruit were in proper accord with the gen
uine love and mutual accord evident at the afternoon get-together.
Reverend Bob Bowling, Pastor of United Methodist Church, performed well as Master of
Ceremonies and welcomed everyone to the social hall of the church where the affair was held.
He led the “oldsters of the younger set” in playing of games and brought many lilts of laughter
from the group as he taught them how to play “Simon Says.”
Reverend Roger Williams was Chorister for the group and inspired the elderly into joining
him in singing of many melodic melodies dear to their hearts.
Lovely Janet Thomas was the accomplished pianist, but took a respite from the keys for. favorite
tune on an autoharp. The aged Reverend P.W. Tidwell arose to sing in a trembling voice, How
Sweet Jesus Is. Yes, it was a great day for the beloved folk of the older generation.
One would be remiss if he were not to recognize the efforts put forth by Nancy Gilbert, Volunteer
Coordinator for the Family and Childrens Services. It was said that she had much to do with the
initiation of the program as witnessed on last Wednesday afternoon. Last year about this time the
elderly citizens of the county were taken on a visit to the Governor’s Mansion.
Gifts for the occasion were financed by various businesses in Cumming and Forsyth County.
The decorations were the handiwork of members representing Cumming Garden Club. Refresh
ments and cakes were afforded by Homemakers Club members belonging to county affiliates clubs
of Chattahoochee, Chestatee, Big Creek, Bethel View and Brandywine. Diana Palmer did her work
well in collecting the gifts from the various donors all around town. Flower arrangements were
beautifully displayed and corsages given to the aged by the respective members of Cumming Garden
Club. Prettily wrapped packages andlarge containers of fruit were attractively displayed and gave
a pleasant atmosphere to accentuate the spirit of the Christmas season.
In the group were three ladies who have survived the years to the tune of 80 years. One was 81
years old, while Mrs. Pearl Martin of Route 5, Cumming, won the special gift as the oldest lady
present. She is a lovely 86.
Mr. Henry Mathis tied Mrs. Martin for the top honor as the oldest among the senior group. He
is also 86 years old and hails from Chestatee Community, Route 1, Gainesville.
It was learned that Mrs. Pearl Martin still resides in the house where she was bom 86 years
ago.
The happy though wrinkled faces of those senior citizens were alive with joy and excitment on
last Friday. It is hoped and wished-for that each of them will enjoy a Very Merry Christmas in
good health and prosper mightily in the New Year ahead.
Yes, it was a great day at Cumming United Methodist Church, Wednesday, December 15th
It will be remembered by everyone of those dear people for as long as they live.

Film-Flam Artists On Prowl
It’s almost Christmas, but
it’s also the season for the
flim-flam artists. Cecil Col
lins, Manager of the Gainesville
social security office reports
that three men, posing as social
security representatives, are
now operating in the Southeast.
Their scheme goes like this:
The men, two claiming to be
social security doctors and the
other a social security repre
sentative, visit the home of an
elderly person and tell him that
he may be entitled to additional
social security benefits if he is
disabled. They convince the
person they can conduct the
necessary physical examina
tion, usually in the bedroom.
Then while the fake “doctors”
are examining the-person, the
other man searches the house
for money. One elderly couple

mas
From dawn till close of day?
Is it the tree that proudly stands
With lights and trimmings gay,
And all the magic packages
Beneath, in foil so birght?
Is it the sparkling white snow
flakes
That clothe the world in white?
Perhaps the rich aroma
That wafts from kitchen door,
Or sound of Christmas carols
Mixed with the city’s roar?
The joy of having loved ones
Together for awhile,
The handclasp of true friend
ship,
Or a neighbor’s ready smile?
The stars that shine in
children’s eyes
When Santa Claus they see,
The story of the Christ Child
And of the wise men, three?
Ah yes, much Christmas hap

Each one of these imparts...
Entwined and held so tenderly
By love within our hearts.
