Now that the heat of summer
Is bringing more and more pe
ople to the Lake Lanier area
it is more important than ever
to brush up on the boating saf
ety rules and regulations. The
State Game and Fish Comm
ission reports that numerous
boating accidents were repor
ted on Lake Lanier last year
and several involved death to
persons In or arouna tne craft."
There is no way to know how
many accidents went without
being reported, or how many
occured on the way to or from
the lake.
The first rule of traveling
with a boat in tow Is to make
sure that the trailer is in good
mechanical condition. The tr
ailer should be checked period
ically to keep in top operating
order. The lugs holding the
rim to the hub shouldbe checked
to make sure they are tight,
and have not been jarred loose.
Lights and wiring should be
checked prior to each trip to see
that turn indicators and brake
signals are in working order.
Next, after connecting the
trailer to the car or truck, m
ake sure that the hitch and
connector are secure, then, pl
ace the safety chains to the
bumper or hitch in a secure
place.
\.
After checking the trailer
then move on to the boat and
see that it Is securely fasten
ed to the trailer. Check the
hoist rope to make sure the
craft is snug against the front
support, and the check the tie
down strap to see that it is
drawn tightly to prevent the
boat from bouncing around on
the trailer.
Equipment in the boat should
be placed in a secure place to
keep ski equipment, ladders,
coolers, grills and such from
blowing out and causing damage
to following vehicles, or simply
causing damage to the inside of
the boat* itself.
Correct use of a craft In the
water and possession of safety
articles are mandatory in water
activities. Most accidents are
caused by neglegence in on of
these instances. Be familiar
with all rules of boating and
when to apply them.

1. When meeting another
craft you should pass to your
right or to the port side of
the oncoming boat.
2. When operating In a mar

signs.
3. Do not follow a boat or
skier to closely to avoid miss

either make an unexpected t-

4. Watch for smaller craft
and do not upset them with ex
cessive speed in their area.
5. Make sure that both bow
and stern lights are in working
order before venturing out after
dark.
6. Be familiar with all nav

7. When pulling a skier e

boat with you to watch the sk

can maintain attention to the
water In front of the boat as well
as view the skier.
8. Each skier must wear an
approved ski belt, jacket or vest
while being towed behind a boat.
9. Skiing is restricted to
one hour after sun up until one
hour before sun down.
10. Do not overload or over
power a craft.
The required equipment
aboard must be one U. S. Coast
Guard approved life preserver
for each person on board, but
there is alot more equipment
reccomended if your boat is
to meet Coast Guard safety s
tandards.
1. Fire extinguisher-Fires

the property damage done to

WHICH LURE FOR BASS?
Surface lures are made to stay on top water even during
retrieve. As a rule, they should be fished very slowly
preferably when the water is calm. Cast them close to
the shoreline in spots where large fish are likely to be
lying such us sunken logs, drifts, stump beds, pockets,
holes in lily pads, gravel bars, rocky points, mud flats
and around weed beds. Karly morning and late evening
hours provide the ideal setting for maximum results with
surface lures. In hot weather, when fish are down deep,
try an extremely noisy retrieve to bring them up.
There are many types of Auto Loans, too. Before you

shallow areas, or in case you
run out of gas. ,
Be safety conscious at all
times, and of course, watch out
for the other fellow. Watch
fulness is a necessity whether
on the way to or from the lake
or in the water. When on the
lake the driver of the boat must
watch for other boats, both 1-
arge and small, skiers, loose
ski ropes, reef markers, and
swimmers. All of these potent
ial accident areas can be
avoided by being aware of your
surroundings at all times.
While driving with a craft in
tow, obey all the rules of the
road. Drive at a lower speed
than usual, drive in an easy,
unjerking manner, so that the
boat will follow the automobile
in an even motion, and allow p
lenty of room to pass and turn.
If you follow these few rules
and others then your summer
of water activities should be
one of fun, and accident free.
