Firecracker 400 Is
Richest In
Racing History
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.—
The most competitive lineup in
the history of the Firecracker
400 is heading for the mythical
halfway point of the 1972 stock
car racing season and the col
orful July Fourth classic at Da
ytona International Speedway is
already laced with more mys
teries than an Alfred Hitch
cock thrUler.
Over 60 Winston Cup Grand
National competitors will
square off in the richest 400-
mile race in auto racing an<
trying to pick a winner before
the $104,135 NASCAR—FIA sc
ramble is mind-boggling.
The spectacular Firecracker
battle traditionally climaxes an
Independence Day celebration
that hits high gear at midnight,
July 3rd, with the Paul Revere
250 road race. The upcoming
14th annual Firecracker 400
will get the usual ten o'clock
starting flag, July Fourth mor
ning. Qualifying for the 400
begins Saturday, July Ist.
Topping the list of hopefuls
is defending champion Bobby
Isaac of Catawba, N.C., who will
be driving Harry Hyde's K & K
Dodge. Isaac started from the
21st position last year and out
lasted 34 lead changes among
eight drivers to grab the vic
tory, finishing in the same lap
with STP teammates Richard
Petty and Buddy Baker, Pete
Hamilton and fifth-place finish
ing Donnie Allison.
Three-time Grand National
champion David Pearson of Sp
artanburg, S.C., could answer,
a lot of Firecracker's riddles
if his Wood Brothers-built Pur
olator Mercury performs like it
has been lately. Pearson has
won three of the last four major
events he's entered and he'll be
in the same car that A. J.
Foyt drove to victory in Feb
ruary's Daytona 500 and the On
tario 500.

who has already scored two 500-

nine-year drought for Chev

Popular Pete Hamilton could
also unravel some of the holi
day confusion. The Dedham,
Mass., athlete will be making
his second appearance of the
season and his Jim Ruggles

Donnie Allison, the younger

Firecracker, is also expected
to figure prominently in the

is ticketed to drive a Bud Moore

THE BEST
For every fisherman who has tangled with and landed
a scrappy fish there are countless kids who will never
know such thrills. In every iown lives youngsters who
will miss the precious memories that come from “just
fishin' ” unless some fisherman shows them the way.
A few lures and that “beat-up” old rod and reel would
be “super” to these less fortunates. So find an eager
kid, give him or her some tackle, and teach them the
things you’ve learned about fishing. You’ll feel better
all over. Best of all, you will have bridged the “gen
eration gap”!
