The
Living
Way
By ROGER WILLIAMS
Pastor, Cumming
First Baptist Church
In a complicated world It is Increasingly necessary that we
define what issues are really Important and which are not.
Jesus pointed this out to folks of his day when he spoke of
their omitting the “weightier matters of the law" in favor of
dwelling on externals that were more obvious. Pm reminded
of die church that squabbled over how high the steeple of their
new building would be when in their midst there were men who
needed jobs, sick who needed nursing, children who needed
personal attention from a caring adult, and juvenile delin
quency that was rampant because no one cared enough to develop
a caring, redemptive relationship with any of those involved.
And we can't buy our way out of such predicaments. What
was really Important, the length of the steeple, or the fellowship
of the people involved and the needs of those around them?
Such a battle Is often waged today In many of our homes
across the land over the “Issue" of hair length.
Fathers are often pitted against sons In some very hateful
encounters that serve to break loving relationships. A question
I have to ask is, “Does God really care about such external
things that vary from culture to culture and generation to gen
eration?" Is It really worth creating a hateful, distrustful,
broken relationship? My guess is that we would rather have the
person than win the argument.
Sometimes a “win" Is more of a loss when we lose a personal
loving relationship with someone. In those lonely moments
when we are left with our thoughts we often grieve over words
harshly spoken that cannot be withdrawn. How David mourned
when Absalom was killed. Absalom had rebelled against his
father, David, and wanted David's place and prestige.
Why? We don't know, but perhaps David recalled those times
when he was more concerned with building an empire than being
a father which may have provided fertile soil for seeds of
rebellion.
What’s more Important folks? Which Issues are worth fighting
for and which should be discarded?

What a shot! Photographers love to find a scene like this.
Flowing water ... a background of trees ... a church spire
in the distance . . . these always make an outstanding picture.
Wherever we travel we see Christian churches in harmonious
settings, and there’s a tendency to think of them as "part of
the scenery.”
But what an important part they are! Every one is a House of
God dedicated to His service. Every one Is a community focal
point, helping In a thousand ways to broaden and beautify the
lives of its members. And every one is a vital link In the shining
chain of Christian belief that stretches around the world.
Not far from where you live, there’s a church that could give
your life a new dimension. Whatever doubts and fears you may
have, bring them to God in His House. You can rely on His
promise that He will not leave you comfortless.
