MacLAIN AND THE “OVERHILL GANG”
In this year of slim attendance for the Braves contests one
must remember also, that Orlando Cepedawas receivings94,ooo
a year in salary and had only appeared in 23 games so far during
i the 1972 season, so his value to the club was questionable,
especially to the man who paid the wages. Mac Lain on the other
hand was only drawing a reported $75,000, which would mean a
possible savings to the club owners as well as boost attendance
and the pitching staff. So the workings of the deal were put into
motion, and the exchange was made.
The trade made by the Atlanta Braves with the Oakland
Athletics last week, which brought Denny Mac Lain to Atlanta
in exchange for first baseman Orlando Cepeda, has been called
a historic move. Indeed, it does seem like it was way back in
history when the Braves front office made a trade, and even
further back since they have made a deal involving a pitcher
of starting caliber. The Brave hurlers, who fearlessly take to
the mound, are more often than not bombed by the opposing
hitters. Even when the Braves win, the other teams have scored
several runs themselves, or have put many runners on the base
paths only to be left there after some good defensive ball playing
by a solid Atlanta fielding unit. No one will deny that the pitching
in Atlanta leaves little to be desired, and the move to get Mac Lain
seems to be the best the organization could do to try and re
enforce their shrinking mound support.
It seems that the only qualifications one needed to make the
starting rotation for the Braves was to either be old, overweight,
or to have had a sore arm at one time or another during ones
pitching career, and Denny Mac Lain fits into at least two of
these categories. However Mac Lain claims that his arm is sound
and that he is capable of pitching, once again, in the Major
Leagues, and if first appearances mean anything, Denny may be
ready to settle down and get back in the groove, and help Atlanta
out of its lowly spot in the league standings. In his first outing
in a Braves uniform Mac Lain held the powerful Cubs to only
three runs in eight innings, which is quite an accomplishment
not only for an ex-thirty game winner but for any pitcher in
the league.
However, in Sunday’s competition Mac Lain did not fair nearly
as well. The heavy-hitting Pittsburgh Pirates nailed Denny to
the so-called “short fence” in Atlanta, as Willie Stargell, Bot
Robertson and A 1 Oliver all hit shots over the wall. Mac Lair
was tagged for six runs in his two and one-third innings on thf
mound and seemed to be looking like the Denny of old before ht
was pulled for reliever Cecil Upshaw.
The outlook for Mac Lain and Atlanta was bright las Tuesday,
but somehow I believe that the brightness has been dimmed
considerably since Sunday. Denny Mac Lain says that he can make
with the Braves because of his personal pride, but I tend to
believe that he has heard the reputation that Atlanta has gained
in the past f<sr its pitching staff. That is, Atlanta has become a
rest home for over the hill pitchers, and Denny might be thinking
that if he doesn’t make it with the “Over the Hill Gang” he
may get to hang up his spikes sooner than he thinks.
