Larry Mulkey Memorial Dedicated
In a brief, simple ceremony
on the evening of May 27, 1972,
?a tangible memorial was ded
icated in honor of Larry Lee
>JUulkey. This memorial, a st
rikingly handsome trophy case
; treated by Mr. J. L. McPher
. Son, stands in the place Larry
; spent a most significant portion
X-jof his life, the Bandroom of
Forsyth County High School. In
Quiet tones, before friends and
family, Band Director Lon Tur
ner spoke of what Larry had
|meant to the Flash of Crimson
;%hen he served as its Drum
>Major from 1969 till 1971. He
Stated that it was only fitting
*sJbat Larry's uniform, and his
spirit, rest alongside the tro
phies and awards won by the
Flash of Crimson. He pointed
out that Larry personified, dur
ing his time with the Band, the

own particular brand of spirit
and dedication.
Mr. Turner’s words, per
tinent and meaningful, struck
chords of painful, but loving
response in the hearts of those
who had gathered for the cere
mony, prior to the Flash of Cr
imson Banquet. At the Banquet,
the first Larry Mulkey
Memorial Award for Out
standing Service to the Flash of
Crimson was presented. The
recipient was John Mize, who
had received a majority of the
votes by his fellow Band mem
bers. The Award was re-named
this year to honor Larry, and
was presented at the Banquet
by his father, Mr. O. C. Mul
key.
The trophy case was provided
for by the Memorial Fund es
tablished soon after Larry’sun
timely an tragic death January
10th of this year. Contributors
30 minutes to Atlanta
from far and wide responded to
the need to establish a living
memorial to honor his short but
vital and meaningful life. Acc
ording to the wishes of Mr. and
Mrs. Mulkey, the Fund was to
be used in connection with the
Flash of Crimson Band, an or
ganization which was uppermost
in Larry’s affections. In addi
tion to the trophy case,which
the public is welcome to see
at any time at the Bandroom by
contacting Mr. Lon Turner, the
Fund will also provide a yearly
scholarship for the Flash of
Crimson’s Drum Major to at
tend camp in preparation for
his duties. It is hoped, as the
Fund continues to grow, that
other scholarships will be made
available in the future.
There is no better occasion
than this week of Larry’s bir
thday . . . July Uth ... to
7 minutes to Lake Laniar
7 minutes to country club
express appreciation to all who
have contributed to the Larry
Mulkey Memorial Fund, and to
remind those who wish o con
tribute that this is a living,
continuing Memorial Fund. Co
ntributions may be sent at any
time to the Bank of Cumming,
the Forsyth County Bank, or to
Mrs. Joyce Turner, Cumming,
Georgia.
Those who contribute, and
those who hae been so generous
in the past few months, may rest
assured that the memory of this
outstanding young man will be
ever present. Not only is it
tangibly expressed in the trophy
case so elegantly holding the
proud symbols of the Flash of
Crimson, but it is also nur
tured in the hearts and lives of
the young people who will bene
fit from the Larry Mulkey Me
morial Fund through the years
to come.
