Joey Wofford Wins
Drug Essay Contest
We are presenting the text of
the winning entry in the Drug
Essay Contest sponsored by
Lanlerland Drugs and the Cu
mmlng Klwanis Club.
Students in Forsyth County
Schools were given several
topics from which to choose.
They were told that their entry
would be Judged on originality
and content alone and not on
sentence structure,
etc.
This contest was sponsored
as a sort of experiment. Our
youth are tired of and usually
bored with sermons about drug
abuse. Nothing seems to turn a
student “off' quicker than pr
eaching to him about the dan
gers of drugs. The effectiveness
of many drugabuseprogramsis
lost for just this reason. We
wer e attempting with this con
test to stimulate students to
think for themselves; research
the subject of their own; and
decide, on a personal basis,
just what the dangers of ex
perimenting with drugs might
be. We're confident that the
student who studies the problem
through in this manner will ne
ver need a drug for a crutch.
A SIOO Savings Bond was
presented for the winning entry
submitted by Joey Wofford, Cu
mming Upper Elementary Sc
hool, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bobby
Wofford. Joey’s paper embodies
a lot of serious thought on the
subject (Why Shouldn’t I Try
Drugs?), exactly what we were
trying to stimulate. Read his
paper carefully and see that
your children read it also.
As you read Joey's paper, his
parents are also reading it for
the first time. I'm sure they’re
proud of him, and somehow,
I think they'll rest a little eas
ier after reading it.

You were born the same way
I was, but about a year before.
Yv.u grew up in the same town
I did. We were always friends.
We' went to the same school
and we were kinda close. Even
at church we were buddies.
But you were always a year
older and a year ahead.
You were real cool and I
tried to be. And I was when I
was around people my age or
younger. But you seemed to be
all the time. All the girls went
wild whenever they saw you.
Tney tnought you were the
greatest. And some of ’em say
I look just like you, but I don't
think I do.
We always wore real nice
clothes. Alot of times you would
have on the same clothes I
would. I guess our tastes were
about the same.
You took guitar lessons with
me until I quit. You stayed
on and started a band and were
pretty good. But it broke up,
too.
You were always "with it."
You started smoking when you
were pretty young, and you’ve
been smoking ever since. Then
you took up drinking. You would
drink anything anybody else
wguld. You weren’t man enough
to say no. When the boys would
ask you if you wanted a smoke,
or drink, and you would say yeah,
because you thought it made
you look tuff I But it didn’t.
At least not to me.
When they ask me I would
say no and finally they stopped
asking. There was always so
mebody like me in the crowd
that wasn’t afraid to say no,
and we would just goof off to
gether without your stupid dr
ugs.
After a while people began
calling you the "Great Lover,"
because you liked all the girls.
You claimed you knew all about
it, even though you came fiom
a broken home. You got every
thing you wanted, and for a
while I tried to keep up with
you. Hut I found that it was
impossible.
You didn’t like sports to
much. I did. I went out for Just
about everything even if I so
metimes didn’t make the team.
You were real good, if you would
just try. But Instead you just
wasted your time doing alot of
dumb things.
We didn’t see much of each
other when you went up to
High School and I still liked
another year in Jr. High, But
I heard alot about you up there.
An awful loti
Like the time you were buy
ing some grass and almost got
caught. But you stuck the bag
in a pipe and knowbody saw
you. Or at least you thought
knowbody did. But the guy that
told me did. And he also told
me some other things that I
didn’t know.
He said that you do dope all
the time. That you just pull
out a joint and start smoking
right after school. Only because
everybody else did. He said it
went on like that all the time.
You were buying and selling.
And trading and smoking, and
had some on you all the time.
Then you started getting it
from "the man on the street."
And you became the source for
the whole school. The you star
ted bringing pills. Anyklnd you
could find. Just so you could
swallow them, or cho p them
up, or dissolve them, or any
thing.
You became a walking candy
store. You had almost anything
a guy could want to blow his
mind. Everything except Speed.
I remember the first time you
ever tried Speed. You thought
you were really tuff then. All
your friends kept asking
you where you got it, and yoy
told them you would get some
for them.
And when you did you had
parties. Wild partlesl Like the
ones you see on television ex
cept they were here!
I would just be laying in my
room at ight, and I would get
these strange calls asking me if
Pve ever tried any drugs, and if
I wanted to. And later I would
find out it was you.
When I got up to High School
it got worse and worse. And
finally around the 11th or 12th
grades you quit and went to
live with some of your friends
in an apartment someplace down
Atlanta way.
You made new friends, but I
guess they didn’t know you half
the time cause they were so
freaked out. And you became
just another "acid head."
We didn’t hear much about
you for a while. Until that,
day. That gloomy, rainy day.
It was to wet to go out the door,
and you were to high to stay
in. So you went out the win
dow. Down 20 stories you flew.
Just like a rock. Onto the top
of a red Corvette. You always
did like Corvettes!
And when I heard about it on
the radio, I couldn’t help re
membering the time we were
talking about drugs and you
asked me why I shouldn’t try
drugs!
Well I'll tell you why. Be
cause you did!

THE FORSYTH COUNTY NEWS
Residential
Area Begun
By Unicity
BY JAN HUGHES
News Feature Writer
A totally planned community
designed for people to enjoy life
within their immediate envir

Martin, President of Unicity,
Inc., as he announced "Haber
sham,” a 940- acre develop
ment stluated on the southern
tip of the shores of Lake Lan
ier, one mile east of Cumming.
Habersham is to be a recrea
tion-oriented community, pre
dominantly residential in char
acter. It is one of the larger
developments of its kind in No
rth Georgia as Martin projected
a 10-year period of develop
ment in three phases.
The first stage of develop
ment is to be completed in five
sub-phases over a 4 year time
span. Construction has begun
and sections of the residential
environment should be compl
eted by spring of ’73.
A distinctive feature of this
new plan is the attention to
the environment as it lends
289 acres for natural open
space, recreation and green
belts. As the development plan
will preserve a maximum
amount of natural resources on
the site, Uniclty, Inc., sought
to organize each land use into
a meaningful and compatible;
arrangement. Seventy percent'
of the total land acreage, or
431 acres, will account for 2,000
residential dwelling units.
In community facilities, Ha
bersham will have two elemen
tary school sites.
Provisions for meeting ed- .
ucation, health and recreation
needs ar e outlined in the plan.
Habersham’s plan calls for
swimming clubs, a tennis club.
Complete affluent te'rrteriary

will be constructed.

neighborhood commercial sho

continuous land owners.
From the illuminating stages
to reality, a substantial am
ount of time and planning has
gone into the environmentally
protected community.
The consulting planners and
engineers, Wilbur Smith and

project for ultimate population
of 7500 by 1981. Having offices
in 17 countries and 26 U.S.
cities, their chief engineer be
lieves that the Forsyth County-
Lanie r area offers more po
tential integrity and character
than any previous developments
of comparable size.
The planned environment,
Habersham, received its name
after a long list of
tions. Unicity, Inc. wanted a
name with simplicity; yet, a
name to blend with the area
and environmental Airm.
The Macon poet, Sidney Lan
ier, captured the challenging
personality of North Georgia’s
earth when he composed "Out
of the hills of Habersham, Down
the valleys of Hall.’’ As the
property overlooks one and one
half miles of Lake Sidney Lanier
shoreline. Unicity, Inc. agreed,
it reechoes and epitomizes the
poet’s "Habersham.”
