CTHE FORSYTH COUNTY NEWS - AUGUST 3, 1972 -
wBHBmi
TO THE PEOPLE OF FORSYTH COUNTY:
I want to publically commend young Joey Wofford for his
timely essay on DRUGS and to report that I have puchased a
$25.00 United States Savings Bond and presented it to him as
a token of my appreciation for this fine article, which should
help to open the eyes of our young people who might be tempted
to "try” dope and pills. If you have not read Joey’s essay,
I refer you to the July 20th issue of The Forsyth County News.
Joey, we are fighting the same JigW. Glad to have your help.
This is the kind of thing that has gained a foot-hold in our county
because of lax-law-enforcement.
"DRUG TRAFFICKERS”
In a recent Forsyth County News I read with much interest
where the present Sheriff stated, "The major drug traffickers
who operate openly during the previous administration almost
in the middle of Cumming have been arrested and are in Jail”.
In answer to this charge I ask a few questions:
1. Is he in Jail or does he go home at night and at times
ride around town, when he is supposed to be in.prison? What
about the other "Hoodlums” that were given “Vacations” from
Jail for the 4th of July week-end? Who spent his nights at home
during the March 1971 term of Court when the judge committed
him to Jail?
2. Isn’t it true that this same pill-peddler was caught several
times .while I was Sheriff and it didn’t take us 3 l/2 years
to do it? (This is a matter of public record and can be verified
in the Clerk’s office.)
When I was Sheriff with only two deputies, we caught and
convicted more burglars and thieves than the present adminis
tration has caught and convicted. This is a matter of record
and can be easily verified.
In last week’s Forsyth County News, there was an interesting
article saying th e Sheriff’s Department had recovered several
stolen cars. I want to ask, what happened to the thieves and
the "Strippers”? They all eot away so thev can continue their
car stealing, it's easy to pull in a car when someone reports
it but if you don't catch the thief, he goes out and steals again.
4. The present Sheriff, campaigning lour years ago stated
that he was going to bring "Honesty and Integrity” to the jail
and Sheriff’s Office. I am going to leave this opinion to the
good law abiding people of the county as to what has been brought
to the jail and the Sheriffs Office. I have heard about it and you
have heard about it.
EXPENSES IN SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT
When I was sheriff I ran the office efficiently and economi
cally. The department only spent what was necessary and the
following totals will show the great Increase in these expenses
since Iwas your Sheriff.
"SPENT”
My last year as Sheriff 1968 $29,541.00
The present Sheriff’s Ist yr. 1969 $63,408.00
The present Sheriffs 2nd yr. 1970 $80,241.00
The present Sheriff’s 3rd yr. 1970 $106,070.00
The present Sheriffs 4th Yr.
January to June 12, 1972 $55,287.00
The above $55,287 is only for about 5 1/2 months of 1972.
At this same rate of spending for the reat of the year of 1972,
this present Sheriff will spend $124,000.00! I know figures don't
make good reading, but I hope you will take time to analyze
the sad story o your tax money as reflected above.
"DIET OR FOOD FOR THE JAIL”
When I was Sheriff in 1968, the food bill varied between
$300,00 and $400.00 per month. I was only able to get a breakdown
for two years under the present Sheriff but this should open all
eyes.
Food for Jail 1970 $8,355.00
Food for Jail 1971 $9,782.00
Food for Jail 1972 $4,452.00

AND MURDER
A CORRECTION FOR THE SHERIFF
Recently the present Sheriff cited certain figures for 1970
and stated that he paid to the commissioners on Civil and Crim
inal $95,447.84. This is one of his "errors”. The amount was
nor nearly so much for 1970 but was only $69,210.00. So the
Sheriff only made a little error of $26,237.84. (My figures
were taken from the official audit in the Commissioners’
office.)
PROMISES! PROMISES! PROMISES!
Here are some of the things that my opponent promised to
do or said he was going to do if he was elected four years ago.
1. He said he was going to move the Sheriff’s Office out of
the Jail and put it in the Courthouse. This he did not do and it
is reported that many other activities have been going on at the
jail not connected with the operations of the jail.
2. Four years ago he said he was going to stop all the
"Clowning” and reckless driving in the county. If he did this
I only ask, Why are there so many "skid marks” and "black
tire tracks” on our highways throughout our county.
3. Four years ago the "Playboy” Sheriff promised to stop
the break-ins and burglaries on the lake and in other parts of
the county. The Sheriff said he agrees that these break-ins
and burglaries have greatly increased during his administration
but according to GBI reports
WRECKED PATROL CARS
We have seen the present Sheriffs department wreck more
cars in 3 1/2 years than in the entire history of the department
since horses and buggies were discarded. Some of these cars
were wrecked in the county and some were wrecked in other
counties! The Sheriff totalled one up in Dawson County and one
was wrecked in Canton and reported by the good Sheriff to have
been wrecked near to the Tastee-Freeze in Cumming but he
remains as "Silent as a Tomb” and refuses to explain what these
cars were doing outside of the county and to give the true facts
concerning them. In addition to the cars that were totalled,
numerous repairs to the patrol cars have been made and I
was able to get these expenses for 2 different years.
Spent for car parts and repairs 1970 - $12,526.00
Spent for car parts and repairs 1971 - $15,655.00
No wonder our county is in debt over a half million dollars.
Forsyth County Country Club' (JAIL)
At the present time the Forsyth County Jail lsbelngrun more
like a "Country Club” than It is a Jail. From the above food
expenses charged to the county by the Jail they would be able
to have T-Bone steaks at least once a day and then at night the
doors are unlocked and some prisoners go home for the night.
Such an operation as this Is nothing but a waste of taxpayers’
Money and should cease Immediately and will, when I become
your Sheriff again.
PILLS
NIGHT PATROL AND RADIO SERVICE
My opponent has had much to say about his 24 hour night
patrol and radio dispatcher. Earlier this year when I m#s on the
night police force in Dahlonega and after my opponent lost his
Chief Deputy, I have heard the Sheriff’s Departments in adjoUe
ing counties, after midnight trying to radio the Forsyth County
Sheriff’s Department or any Forsyth County Car patrolling
and many many times there would be no answer! I say that this
Chief Deputy was the backbone of the present Sheriff’s Depart
ment and after his untimely death that the Department has de
teriorated into a "Social” Club of somekind and I believe that
you and your family are not as safe as you wdre before the loss
of the Chief Deputy, I had a lot of confidence and respect
him as a man, and as a law-enforcement officer, and we all
suffered a tragic loss.
THE WRECKER BUSINESS
When I am your Sheriff again I will keep the wrecker business
of the Sheriff’s office in Forsyth County and not call on out
siders. The wrecker business will be divided up the
several wrecker services that we have la our county, on an
equal basis and you will not be asked to "kick-back” a portion
of your fees to the Sheriff.
SHERIFF AND DEPUTY RELATIONSHIP
i will strive for a hormonious and pleasant working rela
tionship between myself and my deputies to promote more
efficient law-enforcement. I can truthfully state that it was never
necessary for me to resort to "blows” with my deputies and 1
fire any of them without giving the people the reason why.
The present Sheriff needs to tell you what has been going on
between him and his deputies. Com on Mr. Sheriff "frank”
up to the people. *
"LAST MINUTE CHARGES"
I want the law-abiding citizens of our county to be on the
look-out for any last minute charges tha may be made in the
Sheriff s race. J have dealt in facts and want to keep this race
free from “mud-slinging”. When any voter studies the facts
I’m sure they will not be pleased with the prpent performance
and I ask your vote and help, because this is YOUR FIGHT
