YOUNG BANKERS AID COMMUNITY
by William O. Herbster
Senior Vice President &
Director of Urban Affairs
First National City Bank
How do<« business stay on
op of the rapidly changing
ocial problems that afflict
iig cities and small towns
like?
One way is to encourage
roung employees to go out
nto the community on a
rolunteer basis, track down
iroblems and find ways to
telp solve them.
At Citibank, we’ve done
ust that throutfi our Urban
Affairs Advisory Group,
irhose 15 members have
tackled the job with
enthusiasm.
They’ve gone out into the
community to probe prob
ems affecting housing, the
ichools, drugs, jobs, the en
vironment—nearly the entire
ipectrum of the modem
icene.
They’ve talked with
elected officials, community
leaders, agency heads,
teachers, students and many
others, gathering fact and
opinion.
Working with the people of
the community is important.

Reach Milestone In Automotive Industry
SAGINAW, MICH. The
Saginaw Steering Gear Divi
sion of General Motors Corpor
ation here has produced its
50-millionth power steering
system, a milestone never be
fore reached in the automotive
industry.
Production of these 50 mil
lion power steering systems
has added more than 1703 mil
lion to the economy of this
community in payrolls, pur
chases, and capital investment
since 1951.
The 50-millionth system con
sists of a power steering gear,
hydraulic pump, and connec
ting hoses, all of which are
produced by the division for
all GM cars and many other
domestic and foreign car build
ers.
The division first introduced
its passenger car power steer
ing on 1952 model Cadillacs,
Buicks, and Oldsmobiles late
in 1951. Today more than 90
percent of all GM cars produc
ed are power steering equip
ped. Full-sized GM cars are
100 percent power steering
equipped and 76 percent of the
small cars are power-steered.
It took Saginaw Steering Gear
15 years to build the first 25
million systems, and only six
years to produce the next 25
million.
Today’s power steering sys
tem is far more efficient than
the original model. The current
power gear produces over 200
percent more steering torque
than its 1951 predecessor, and
steers the car with only 2->A
lbs. of driver effort, compared
to 8 lbs. required by the first
gear. It occupies far less space
in the engine compartment and
weights 32 lbs. less.
In the early years, Saginaw
power steering gear had a uni
form ratio of steering wheel
movement to change of car
direction. Today nearly all pas
senger car gears include a var
iable ratio, which provides
easier steering for parking and
sharp turns. The variable ratio
feature was introduced on 1966
model Cadillacs.
The hydraulic pump is more
compact, is 6 lbs. lighter, and
delivers 1400 psi of hydraulic
pressure as compared to 900
psi produced by the original
models. The amount of oil
flow in today’s pump is more
than double that of the orig
inal models. Hoses now are
stronger, shorter, more heat
resistant, and more durable.
Saginaw's first power steer
ing system was developed for
use on heavy military vehicles
during World War 11. Follow
ing the wßr, the system was
redesigned for possible use on
passenger cars. As cars grew
progressively heavier and tire

Herman Diaz, the group’s

The original 1951 power steering gear and pump are compared
to present-day counterparts by Pam Malecke of Saginaw Steering
Gear’s Communications Section. The 50-million power steering
system milestone was passed just six years after building the
25-millionth system.

Typical of the testing performed during design, development
and manufacture or 50-million power steering systems is this
cold room test, in which a complete power system is subjected
to temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees F. The technician is

pressures lower, the need for
power-assisted steering grew
more acute. By 1951 it was felt
that the average driver would
welcome power steering as a
driver convenience and safety
improvement. It was introduc
ed as an option on several GM
1952 model cars.
Today this popular accessory
is widely used on trucks, bus
es, tractors, industrial and off
highway vehicles, and boats.
The production of power
steering systems alone provid
ed jobs for 3,506 of the 8,700
employes in Saginaw Steering
Gear’s seven plants. It has ac
counted for more than $297
million of the firm’s payroll
since 1951. In addition, over
$340 million has been spent

The Saginaw power steering
system is used by most Ameri

Since 1951 Saginaw Steering
Gear has built five new plants

the division hns introduced a
