Fall is beauty as Miss Karry
Wells, Australia, recently re
ceived the crown of Miss Uni
verse in Puerto Rico. Just this
week, 12 beauties from America
left for the Oreint to entertain
troops in Thailand and Vietnam.
Now, the Miss Lake Lanier pag
eant will feature 13 beauties to
express their talents, beauty
and poise. Each one will hope
to win and later vie for the
Miss Georgia Pageant.
Etiquette seems to be in the
air throughout the year, but dur
ing this season, the world seems
to spotlight its attention to the
world of women and girls. Fall
is beauty as smiles of girls will
brighten many stages both in
high school and at state and
national pagenats.
As beauty is not gathered
from a book or a mirror, the
judges will be among those to
have the hardest decision.

Someone said, “your eyes are
the window to your soul," there
fore, judges will be observing
poise, style, self-confidence,
but there is somethingaboutthe
eyes of a beauty contestant. Her
eyes seem to say "there is
something beyond tonight."
The excellent books of Amy
Vanderbilt and Emily Post help
traditional occasions and they
contribute a great deal of in
formation on manners, grace,
and grooming tips, but very
little content relates to the
beauty's interior composition.
To some merit, beauty is
visual attractiveness, but the
main purpose of attractiveness
is to be aware and accept out
selves the way we are. From
this point, we need to go. One
of America’s greatest women,
Helen G. Brown, says, “your
vitality and good looks indeed
are a reflection of your kind
ness to the world."
In many ways, a beauty con
testant is saying to the world,
"I have pride in myself and I
care about life." Pageants are
a good reflection upon the hearts
of people.
Good luck, Phyllis Martin.

Figure Skating Club achieve
ment trophies presented at the
final performance of the Atlanta
Figure Ice Skating Show.
Trophies are only awarded to
skaters who have made unusual
progress in the United States
Figure Skating Association and
the AFSC test programs. One
of Tamy’s trophies was awarded
for her skating achievements
from May of 1971 to May of 1972.
This Included the second and
third figure tests, the prelim
inary dance test, the silver and
gold ribbon tests and a first
place finish in free style and
figures competition and a tnird
place finish in figures.
In her fourth test, Tamy was
required to perform a three
minute free style program. Si
nce there is no rink large en
ough in Atlanta for a free style
performance this part of the test
was performed at the Macon
Coliseum. Completing this and
the eight figures, Tamy became
a “novice" skater. Now, she is
practicing for the Junior and
Senior test.
Skating three years, Tamy
said “skating is different from
the ordinary hobbies especially
in the South because in the North
most kids do skate with the
variety of the skating rinks.”
Sanctioned by USFSA, Tamy
has appeared in two per
formances at the Holiday On
Ice. The petite 5 foot teenager
said “size is an important asset
for skating because the jumps,
runs and footwork is easier to
perform."
Tamy has eight years of dance
study from the Ruth Mitchell
Company in Atlanta. She expl
ains, “I stopped dancing for
skating."
Her practice periods range
from four to eight hours esp
ecially in the winter. During
the school year, Tamy appears
at the Igloo Skating rink on
Roswell Road around 6 a.m.
She skates for an hour then
several hours after school.
As skating is a hobby gaining
in popularity, Tamy added “if
they want to compete, most
serious skaters shoot for the
Olympics.”
