Sen. Talmadge Again Calls
For End To Vietnam War
WASHINGTON, D.C.—U.S.S

calling for an end to United S

oon as the release of American
prisoners of war can be
Tuesday strongly opp

U.S. military forces to any o
ther foreign battlefield unless
the Nation’s security was dir
ectly involved.
In a taped radio interview b
roadcast throughout Georgia o
ver some 100 radio stations,
Sen. Talmadge described Viet
nam as “a war that we wouldn’t
fight and that we wouldn’t quit.
I hope that it will be a warning
in the future that never again
will we commit American tr
oops to battle, anytime, any
where, under any conditions, w
ith any power, unless our natio
nal security is directly in
volved.”
In the same interview, Sena
tor Talmadge said that frustra

—Asked for his position on
gun control, Sen. Talmadge st
rongly opposed both the confi
scation of firearms and their
registration. But, he said he
would vote “to eliminate the so
called ‘Saturday night specials’
that are easily concealed in the
palm of the hand. Most murders
and crimes are committed with
those miniature weapons.”
Senator Talmadge’s entire
remarks on these topics follow:
SENATOR, YOU RECENTLY
VOTED FOR STRONG LEGIS
LATION TO GET AMERICAN
TROOPS OUT OF VIETNAM
AND SOUTHEAST ASIA. WHAT
DID THE MEASURE PROVIDE..
AND WHAT IS YOUR THINK
ING ON THE WAR?
It provided that if we could
get our prisoners of war back,
that all the troops would be
withdrawn from Southeast A
sia four months thereafter. T
his is in line substantially with
what the President has recom
mended. We have been involved
in a war now with Southeast
Asia for 10 long years. It has
been a war with a fourth rate
power. . . a war that we wou
ldn’t fight and that we wouldn’t
quit. I think almost all Ameri
cans want to terminate this w
ar provided we can do so with
honor. It we can get the troops
back and our P.O.W.’s back, I
think that will retrieve our hon
or and give us some opportun
ity to get out. I hope that it
will be a warning in the fu
ture that never again will we
commit American troops to ba
ttle, anytime, anywhere, under
any conditions with any power
unless our national security is
directly involved.
WHILE WE’RE TRYING TO
GET OUT OF THE WAR IN
VIETNAM, THERE ARE IN
CREASING ATTACKS ON DE
FENSE SPENDING. IT HAS E
VEN GOTTEN TO BE A MA
JOR ISSUE IN THE PRESIDEN
TIAL CAMPAIGN. HOW DO Y
OU STAND ON THIS?
It has become a schizoph
renia of the times largely be
cause of the unpopularity of
the war in Southeast Asia. I
am already alarmed at the re

Maddox To Host
Own Television Show
ATLANTA—Lester Maddox
the public official, the business
man, the lay leader, the hum
orist, the philosopher and the
patriot, is scheduled to hit
TV with a splash with his own
TV show.
Maddox, one of the nation’s
most controversial and best
known men; the former Gover
nor and now Lt. Governor of
Georgia will head his own show
which is expected to be one of
the top-rated new variety talk
shows.
Governor Maddox stated that
he expects, like other enter
taines, his friends to view and
listen, but unlike others, he
listen, but unlike others, he
feels that both the curious and
those who dislike “ole Lester”
will also watch the show. Under
these circumstances, he would
expect one of the largest TV
audiences on the American
scene.
Bob Parkinson, outstanding
Washington and new York tele
vision producer who will be ex
ecutive producer of the Maddox
series which will be known as
the “LESTER MADDOX . . .
U.S.A. Show”, said thefirsttwo
telecasts will be “pilots” for a
13-week syndicated series. Pa
rkinson said the show will open
with a patriotic choreograph c
number, featuring pretty tfrls
in red,white and blue outfits
Outstanding stars of the world
of entertainment will he
featured as guests. Each «
the guests wiU be engaged in a
dialogue with Governor Maddox
whose personality will pervade
the entire show. A mixed chorus
of 40 voices will sing inspira
tional hymns and patriotic so
“It will simply be Lester
Maddox at his best” said Par
kinson.
Parkinson said the response
to the special and the proposed
series has been extremely
satisfying, both from the stand
point of sponsors and from the
standpoint of TV stations which
have expressed an interest in
the “Lester Maddox...U.S.A.
series.
Governor Maddox, who has
walked out on more TV talk
shows than anyone else, aid
the 30-minute programs, which
will be produced in the main

said Governor Maddox, who
walked out on both the Joe Pyne
and the Dick Cavett shows when
he chargd they had tried to
present a false image of the
South.
Governor Maddox, whose in
terests othe than politics in

Underground Atlanta, said he
had been thinking about doing
his own TV show for some
time.
“I guess I have had ideas
for 15 or 20 years about Ho
llywood,” he said. “I sing,
not too well, bu t as good as
some already getting by on
TV. I’ve looked at people on
television and I say, man alive,
if they laugh at that guy and he’s
having to put on and it comes
naturally with me, it just doesn’t
make sense for him to be making
all that money.”
He added, he has always tried
to be different from the norm,
and that while it has become
“old hat” for entertainers to
enter elective public office, he
will start what may be another
trend.
