Q. Is thers a maximum So
cial Security benefit amount t
hat can be paid to a family?
I've been told that some fami
lies have received several tho
usand dollars.
A. It is not unusual to pay
a young father and his depen
dents between SIOO,OOO and
$150,000 In Social Security be
nefits during his lifetime. Di
sability benefits are paid every
month, as long as a person
remains disabled. There is no
limit on the length of time a
person may receive Social se
curity disability or retirement
benefits.
Q. I am 24 years old and em
ployed at a high-paying job
which Is very dangerous. In the
event I become permanently di
sabled, what would Social Se
curity provide for my wife anb
A. If your earnings for the p
ast two years were at least
$7,800 a year, $470.00 In be
nefits would be paid monthly
to you and your family. These
disability benefits are paid for
each month you are disabled,
regardless of the length of time.
Benefits to your children maj
continue after age 18, U
they attend school as full-time
students and have not married.
Q. I was sent to and extended
care facility after spending a
week in the hospital. Medicare
paid for 12 days of care in the
nursing home and then notified
me that the services were no
longer covered. Am I not enti
tled to 100 days of coverage?
A. Extended care services are,
covered only as long as the pa
tient needs full-time skilled nu
rsing care. Custodial care-help
with walking, eating, bathing,
taking of routine medications,
an the like-is not covered. Ask
your nursing home personnel to
explain to you why your cover
age stopped.
Q. I dropped my eye glasses
and broke them. I am far-si
ghted and have to have glasses
in order to drive my auto. Will
Medicare pay for a new pair?
A. No. Medicare pays only for
the glasses that people wear a
fter a cataract operation. All
other kinds of eye glasses are
excluded from coverage.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ABOUT SOCIAL SECURITY
Q. I have been told I have
to have a birth certificate In
order to apply for retirement
under Social Security. Please
send me a form to get one. I
was born In 1907 andbirths were
not registered at that time.
A. You were given Incorrect
Information about the necessity
for a birth certificate. Since b
irths were not recordedfor your
year of birth, the only birth
certificate you could get would
be a delayed birth certificate.
There Is no need to go to the ex
penses as you probably already
have sufficient evidence In your
posslssion, such as a baptismal
cerltflcate, old Family Bible,
Insurance policies (whether or
not in force) childrens's birth
certificates, marriage records,
etc. Usually, the older the evi
dence, the better it Is.
Q. I will 65 years old soon.
I have never done any work un
der social security. Is there
any reason why I should con
tact the social security office?
A. Yes, you should contact
the social security office and
inquire about Medicare.

of a farm crew. I report to the
State Employment Off Ice In each

employers must report my wa

A. Each employer must re
port your wages and send In
the social security contributi
ons if he paid you cash wages
of $l5O or more during a cal
endar year, or If you worked
for 20 or more days for him
during the year for cash wages
figured on a time basis (rather

I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere appreciation to the voters of
Forsyth County for the confidence they placed in me on August 8 by casting the largest
number of votes for me for the office of Tax Commissioner. I also appreciate the reception
which I received from you while campaigning for this office. I also appreciate the manner in
which my opponents ran their campaign. I feel they ran a clean campaign with the interest of
Forsyth County in mind. It will be impossible for me to see each of you before the run-off
election, therefore I am again asking for your vote and support in the Democratic Primary
run-off August 29. Remember and support me again on August 29 and I will remember
and support you for the next four years as your Tax Commissioner.
