THE FORSYTH COUNTY NEWS-AUGUST 17.1972 -
The latest in city parks are
vest pocket parks—small parks
no bigger than vacant lots.
But the tiniest park on record
is Mill Ends Park in Portland.
Oregon. Measuring just 45.8
square inches it’s reserved for
snail races and leprechauns.
(Really!) Today all parks,

SPECIAL - “Kids and cars
go together. ‘Wheels’ carry
them to new and exciting
places and give them an in
creasing sense of freedom,”
says Donald Osburn, director
of program services, National
4-H Service Committee.
Young people today are
impatient for the time they
may receive their driver’s
license and get behind the
wheel of the family car, the
committee spokesman notes.
And to prepare for the great
day is an exciting and popular
program which enables young
people to learn about cars
even before they are old
enough to drive the 4-H
automotive program.

TheJFirestone Tire & Rubber
Company and with super
vision of the Cooperative Ex
tension Service, adults and
older teens teach the mem
bers 2bout the basic workings
of a car, principles of elemen
tary maintenance and safety,
Osburn explained.
A new dimension has been
added to this year’s automo
tive program, an opportunity
to participate in a special
defensive driving course
which originally was limited
to adults.
4-H is the first major
youth organization to incor
porate DDC in its national
program, Osburn reported.
South Dakota, one of the
first states to adopt a DDC
program (endorsgjLby the Na
tional Safety Council), is
highly enthusiastic about
what it can accomplish.
“The DDC program is now
available to 4-H members 14
years or older who are en
rolled in the automotive proj
ect as well as to any other
youths who wish to take the
training,” Roy Beaird, state
4-H agent, says.
“About half of all traffic
fatalities happen to people 25
years old and under,” Beaird
observes. “That statistic alone
shows that the defensive driv
ing course is an important
addition to the 4-H pro
gram,” he adds.
Youths enrolled in the 4-H
automotive program also have
the opportunity to earn other
incentives and recognition.
Firestone provides funds for
four medals of honor to out
standing automotive members
in each participating county.
Top state award is an all
expense trip to the 51st Na
tional 4-H Congress in Chi
cago, Nov. 26-30.
At a special recognition
event during the Congress,
eight young people will re
ceive national educational
scholarships of S7OO each
from the donor.
Individuals or youth
groups interested in taking
part in the 4-H automotive
program and older teens and
adults who are interested in
qualifying as instructors
should contact their county
extension office.
