HOW DO YOU CALL DEER?
I found Susan Michele Tate (4) and Denise McDaniel (5),
pictured above, looking for Smiley, the young deer in the
Cumming City Park. They saw the ducks but not the deer and
wanted to know how to call a deer. Neither their mothers nor
I knew the answer to that one. Do any of you?
GERALD BLACKBURN INTERVIEWED
I interviewed Mr. Gerald Blackburn, energetic director of
the City Park, in wtiat must be the most unique office in the
County. He told me about the summer swimming classes for
fours and fives. Out of the 99 enrolled, there now are 85 who
will progress to the official stage of Beginner. This means
they are not afraid of the water, can put their heads under
water, and can exhale in the water and then come up to inhale.
He thinks the young children have adapted very well and are

extremely cooperative.
The wading pool is used by many children with some actually
learning to swim almost on their own.
When questioned about problems, Gerald replied, “The
only problem we have with young children is with running. They
seem to run wherever they go - which is natural, of course -
and we end up with skinned knees. But the mothers have been
very cooperative.*’
Before I left I asked him if he had any general suggestions
to make. He quickly answered, “I’d love for the parents to work
together to encourage expansion of the recreational facilities
in this area.’’
And I want to add that Right Now is not too soon for parents
and grandparents of young children to get started.

METHODIST VACATION SCHOOL
Driving down Pilgrim Mill Road I saw Kay Studdard (4)
and Bethany Bowling (3), pictured above, waiting on the Methodist
Church steps for vacation church school to begin. They arrived
early with their mothers, who were co-directors of the program
there.
Mrs. Bowling told me that approximately 78 children were
attending, the majority being under six, with the fives having the
largest class (16). Although the youngest actual class was for
threes, there were some two-year-olds in the nursery.
As a service project the church invited Day Care Center
children, who perhaps otherwise might not have been able
to attend a vacation church school this summer.
Just as I had to leave the Rev. Bob Bowling started the
singing. It sounded like so much fun I was wishing I could stay.
TWINS PRESENT PROBLEM
Here’s an interesting problem involving twins. I’ve been
making up the mailing list of Early Childhood kindergarteners.
These names and addresses will be pasted on envelopes
stamped, “To the Parents of”. iTie problem is, should I list
Brenda and Linda Goss together, and Carol and Shirley Martin
together - in order to save a couple of stamps - or should I
list them each separately in order to make each one feel
important? I decided to list them separately. What would you
have done?
SCHOOL FOR THE FIRST TIME
It’s about time for school to open, and for at least 500 young
Forsyth County children it will be for the very first time.
They will be starting in kindergartens, first grades, special
classes, day care centers, Head Start, and a few will have
tutoring at home.
Usually teachers and parents are almost as excited as the
children, but when you’re five or six it seems as if the time will
never come.
One way to help the children and their schools is to really
encourage both the children and also their schools. How fortunate
is the child who makes a good start in his education!
Next week, young children at the Presbyterian Activity Week
will be featured.
(Editor’s Note: Mrs. Hopewell works with the Forsyth County
Early Childhood Program).

RUNOFF AUGUST 29
‘Thanks’ Ain’t Enough!
IN THE AUGUST 8 PRIMARY, YOU GAVE ME 1907 VOTES. WELL, I'VE LOOKED ALL THROUGH
WEBSTER'S DICTIONARY AND CAN'T FIND THE RIGHT WORDS TO EXPRESS MY FEELINGS OF
APPRECIATION. SOME OF THEM COME CLOSE; LIKE OVERJOYED, OVERWHELMED, ESTATIC,
ELATED AND HUMBLE. I GUESS A COMBINATION OF THESE WOULD BE MORE FITTING.
I'D REALLY APPRECIATE IT IF YOU WOULD MAKE ANOTHER TRIP TO THE POLLS AND VOTE
FOR ME IN THE RUN-OFF TUESDAY AUGUST 29.

WATCHWORD FOR BOATING SAFETY - #3
1. Watch out for stumps, submerged logs and rocks.
Proceed carefully in waters with heavy amounts of
leaves and debris. 2. Lower anchor, don’t throw it. 3.
Be considerate. Don’t speed close to anchored or low
powered craft. You can be held responsible for any
accident caused by your wake. 4. Boats WITHOUT
motors always have right of way over boats WITH
motors. 5. Remember that every boat of 16 feet or less
must have an approved life preserver, buoyant vest or
cushion for each person aboard. This is not only the
law, it can mean the difference between life and death!
